Key Messages for Q1 Reporting - November 2014

Reporting Grades
Teachers at grades 7-12 should be familiar with the revised provincial reporting
grades and descriptors, most recently updated in August 2014. See attached
reporting codes (grades and descriptors) now aligned across grades 7-12.
Regardless of their classroom assessment and tracking practices, teachers at
grades 7-12 are encouraged to reflect on the variety of evidence gathered
throughout the reporting period and make a judgement to identify the reporting
descriptor and percentage grade that best reflects each students learning to date.
In grades 7-8, teachers will report on student achievement using benchmark percentage
grades at 5% intervals. For example, students demonstrating excellence in their
understanding and application of concepts and skills in relation to the learning
outcomes may receive 100%, 95% or 90%. Benchmark grades below 40% may be used
in consultation with the principal. See attached support document for reporting in
Grades 7 & 8 for 2014-15 which includes benchmark grades.
In grades 7-8, teachers will continue to report on student achievement by strand in
Mathematics, English Language Arts and French Language Arts.
Anecdotal Comments
Anecdotal comments are brief, personalized summaries of student achievement to date.
The primary audience for anecdotal comments are parents. As such, comments should
be free of educational jargon and written in parent-friendly language.
Comments should continue to identify student strengths (what the student knows and
can do), challenges (those areas providing difficulty) and strategic suggestions to
support improvement - all in relation to learning outcomes. See attached document for
discussion titled Secondary Comment Exemplars - Quarter 1.
Character counts for comments have not changed - 400 characters for all subjects
grades 7-12 EXCEPT 800 characters for grades 7-9 Mathematics/ELA/FLA.
Teacher are encouraged to use View My Comments from the PowerTeacher Portal to
review their written comments.
Learner Profile
Reporting codes for the Learner Profile are used to identify student achievement in
relation to social development / work habit expectations.
Like reporting grades, learner profile codes are assigned by all teachers at grades 7-12
after the careful review of gathered evidence. See attached Learner Profile categories
with identified expectations as they appear on the grades 7-12 report card.

Learner Profile Comment
A learner profile comment may optionally be added to support the learner in
understanding where development is required or to further elaborate on areas that are
well developed.
For the 14-15 school year, such a comment must be entered in the final grade comment
box after the academic comment. Teacher should begin their comment with L.P. for
Learner Profile. For example, L.P. Isabelle would benefit from regular organization of
class notes, handouts and other learning materials.
IPP Reporting
There have been no changes in the reporting process for students with an Individual
Program Plan. This report is completed in TIENET. See attached iNSchool support
document 'Creating an IPP Report'.
