Sensitivity or rationality, one of the common classifications of human, has been

an important indicator for me since I was young. Before entering the City University
of Hong Kong, I even tried to divide the two majors using this dichotomy. To me,
Bachelor of art in Creative Media (BACM) is a degree emphasizing on nurturing
students sensitivity towards the needs of society while Bachelor of Science in
Creative Media (BScSCM) focuses on teaching students to operate computing
technologies with rationality. Based on this assumption, I thought BScSCM would be
a good fit for me. Unlike other schoolmates, choosing between these two majors was
not a dilemma for me at the beginning.
If I were to describe myself, I had always taken pride in remaining rational,
logical and practical. After finding my passion in art and design, I have come a long
way from a kid knowing nothing about art to a university student who acquires some
professional knowledge of art and design. Creativity has been a core value in my art
journey. Some may say rationality kills creativity. Yet, from what I learnt in primary
school and secondary school, I have discovered that true creativity is not just about
coming up with new ideas. Instead, it requires knowledge and control. For example, a
creative chef needs to have knowledge on the ingredients and tools he has. To
accomplish his culinary arts, he would have to discipline himself and stays focus.
Thus, being creative requires knowledge on the latest techniques and other design
principles or theories. With this belief in mind, I joined numerous workshops and
attended art courses such as those held by Savannah College of Art and Design
(SCAD) so as to better equip myself before entering university. Hoping to start a
career in art, I chose to study visual art in Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary
Education (HKDSE) and got 5* out of 5**. To sum up, my past experience of
studying art has always been more about skill acquisition and knowledge building.
However, my view towards art and creativity and the study of BACM and
BScSCM has undergone a drastic transformation. After one year of study in Social
Sciences in the University of Hong Kong School of Professional and Continuing
Education (HKU SPACE), I came across the rationality in humanities. From
psychology to philosophy, from politics to sociology, critical thinking had been a key.

My study in HKU SPACE suggests that apart from skills and knowledge, thinking is
also critical to being rational. Now, having serial lectures and lessons for over a
month in university, I started to understand more about BACM and the study of
critical thinking. While BScSCM is like computer sciences, teaching me rules and
regulations set by computers, BACM is a study of clear and reasoned thinking that
leads to creativity. Referring back to the previous example, a creative chef who has
exquisite craftsmanship also needs to think critically about exciting recipes so as to
create cuisine. Thus, there is no simple dichotomy between BACM and BScSCM as
well as the idea of rational and sensitive.
Nevertheless, one thing I know for sure is that rational and critical thinking is
important to my pursuit of creativity. It is because a persuasive artist is first of all a
persuasive thinker. It is my uversity goal to learn to think out-of-the-box", challenge
consensus and develop my own style. Having said that, I would like to choose BACM
as my major. I believe I will be encouraged to think critically in the process of art
creation, connections between ideas and formations as well as development of
different artistic styles. I would like to end my statement by using my favorite quote
from Theodore Roosevelt, Keep your eyes on the stars but keep your feet on the
ground. Throughout my university years, I will try my utmost to utilize my creativity
and learn to think critically.
