The Lorax
1. Who does the Once-ler represent?
The humans
2. Who does the Lorax represent?
The trees and animals who cannot speak for themselves
3. The Once-lers business failed. What happened to cause the failure of his business?
He ran out of trees and resources because he never replanted any trees
4. The Once-ler learned that he had made a serious mistake. What, in your opinion, was his mistake?
He overused the resources, he was very selfish and he took advantage of the truffula trees
5. Why is it important to have people like the Lorax in the world?
To have someone to care about things like that and to show us the damage we really do
6. What seems to be the intent of Dr. Seuss in writing this story?
To show people that if we dont stop some of the things that were doing, that is how our world is going to end up
7.

Do you equate the ideas, people, places, or events in the story with real-life situations in our present-day society? If so, with whom or
what?
Yes. I equate it with society, we are constantly tearing down trees and dont replant them, to make room to bigger and better our city
8.

What values appear to be important in the story? Are any of our present-day societal values in conflict with these? If so, which ones
and for what reasons?
To take care of our natural resources because if we continue to use them like we are, theyll run out. Yes, our present day society wants bigger and
better and more. However, we need to find a balance between having that and using our resources to accomplish that, wisely.
9. Does this story appear to have been written for young children, for their parents, or for both? Explain.
It is for all ages. However, the format it was written in seems to be written in a way that it is easier for young children to understand.
10. Do you find this video to be appropriate for young children? Why or why not?
Yes. I do because it speaks the truth and it has a good message.

The Truax
1. Why did the Guardbark want people to leave trees alone? Give at least two reasons.
The trees provide habitat for animals and keep our air clean and fresh.
2. Why did Truax think it was reasonable to cut some trees? Give at least two reasons.
To prevent wildfires from getting out of hand and to teach people how to conserve.
3. Name three ways that Native Americans depended on trees. How did early American settlers use trees? Do we still need trees today?
Native Americans used trees to make products such as canoes, weapons and tools. They gathered food from trees for their tribes. Early American
settlers used trees to make tools and houses and even exported wood to make profit. We will always need trees. They not only provide us with many
different products but also with fresh, clean air.
4. Make a list of at least six products we use that come from trees.
-Paper
-Wood for houses
-Firewood
-Pencils
-Furniture
-Fences
5.

Go back to your list. If we could not cut trees, we would have to use something else to make the products you listed. Beside each
product, write down what we could use to replace the product made from trees.
Paper and pencils could be replaced by computers. Fences could be made out of metal. We could burn other things in a fire, or replace it with natural
gas. Houses and furniture could be made from synthetic materials.
6.

A "renewable" resource is something that can be "made new again". In other words, we can make more of the resource so that it never
has to run out. What does "nonrenewable" resource mean?
Any natural resource from the Earth that exists in limited supply and cannot be replaced if it is used up
7.

On your list of replacement products, did you have some products made from oil (like plastics)? Is oil a "renewable" resource or a
"non-renewable" resource?

Yes. Non-renewable.
9. What does Truax and his friends do to make sure there are plenty of trees?
They protected the trees we already have and planted new ones.
10. Truax and other US timber cutters do many things (like replanting and controlling forest fires) to make sure we have plenty of trees for
the future. How does that make you feel?
It makes me feel good that they did that and I feel everybody should play a more active role in a situation like this.
