Students will recognize local, state, and national leaders demonstrate
responsible citizenship by helping their country, state, city and
community.
Its important for students to know who makes decisions for them.
Students should be aware of who is in charge of certain duties as it may
affect them. After all they are the next generation and its the decisions
that the government makes that shapes what the future may look like.
Students will already know about the need for leaders in communities
and will be able to describe their roles and responsibilities.
Government service, governor, representative, local government,
national government, state government.

Strategies
Draw three concentric circles on the board. Label the center
circle Local, the next outlying circle state, and the outermost
circle national. Ask students to look at the diagram and
explain how the words might be related. How might this
diagram explain the relationship between local, state and
national government. Teacher will do a KWL chart to
display what students may already know and will work to
finish the chart throughout the lesson.
Today we will learn about leaders who work to solve problems in North
Carolina. These leaders work to keep citizens of the state safe. They also make
laws and help provide government service that people need.

learning about local, state, and national
leaders.
Teacher will display first sheet on over head
board. Teacher will lead discussion about
Local leaders.
Local leader- North Carolina has two type
of local government. City and county.
People in these counties elect their leaders.
These leaders offer government services for
their communities. They build and keep up
local roads, schools and park.
Students will read next local leaders section
from their social studies book.
Teacher will display state government sheet
on the smart board and lead a discussion
about how state governments take c are of

state parks and state highways. Each state


provides drivers license and public
education for citizens. Not all state leaders
are in government, Some work with groups
that serve the state communities. Students
will then read next few pages in their social
studies book.
Teacher will then go into national leaders
and explain that every state appoints two
senators to serve as representatives in the
national government. Students will hold a
small discussion about the senators and fill
out their leaders cut and paste worksheet

Students will be given a cut out worksheet to glue


on their social studies binder. Worksheet will
include lesson vocabulary words and local, state and
national leaders fill in the blank names. (student will
fill these in as teacher instructs in the teacher input)
Then the class will be divided into three groups the
local leaders, national leaders and state leaders.
Flash cards with questions will be place on the
board. Each team will answer questions and if
answered correctly their team will receive one point.
13 questions will be asked.
Students will complete Whos responsibility is it anyways

Students will then share their answers to whos responsibility is it. This
worksheet will lead a discussion about who the local state and national
leaders are, why their important and what task are they responsible for.
Students will then fill in the L in their KWL charts.

Evaluation
Summative
Students will complete Cut and paste hand outs. Students who
successfully place 8 or more responsibilities in the correct column have
learned the objective of this lesson.

This lesson includes reading from chapter book for auditory


learning styles. It includes a cut and paste for Kinesthetic
Learning as well as pictures of our leaders and where they
conduct their job for visual learners.
Teacher will pull IEP students in small groups to assist with cut
and paste activity.
