Peterson Physical Education Course Overview

Illinois State Standards (Course Standards):


Standard 19: Acquire movement skills and understand concepts needed to engage in healthenhancing physical activity.
Standard 20: Achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical fitness based upon
continual self-assessment.
Standard 21: Develop team-building skills by working with others through physical activity.
Standard 22: Understand principles of health promotion and the prevention and treatment of
illness and injury.
Standard 23: Understand human body systems and factors that influence growth and
development.
Standard 24: Promote and enhance health and well-being through the use of effective
communication and decision-making skills.

Overarching (Course) EUs:

*Fit people engage in physical activity on
a regular basis.
*You are accountable for how you treat
people and your surroundings.
*A team is more than a collection of
individuals.

Kindergarten-2nd grade

Standards 19-24
EUs:
*Fundamental movement skills and movement concepts need to be developed during
childhood.
*To participate in activities of daily living, one must have strong muscles.
*Physical activity is good for your health.
*It is important to exhibit consideration and cooperation with classmates and teachers.
*A safe environment is everyones responsibility.
*Actions can demonstrate encouragement.
EQs:
*Why is the development of motor skills essential during childhood?
*What is it important to have strong muscles?
*What changes happen to my body when I am physically active?
*What does consideration for and cooperation with classmates and teachers look like in
physical education class?
Performance Task/Criteria: Observation, participation, performance tasks

3rd grade-5th grade

Standards 19-24
EUs:
*Physical activity involves using motor skills and knowledge of movement concepts.
*It is important to be able to participate in cardiovascular activities for an extended amount of
time.
*It is important to know how to improve the four components of physical fitness.
*Participation in physical activities/sports can provide an opportunity for developing an
understanding and respect for differences among people.
*Physical activity can vary by frequency, intensity, time, and type.
*Unique fundamental skills and strategies are required to be competent in any sport.
EQs:
*How do motor skills and movement concepts relate to the activities or games played?
*How can you improve your cardiovascular endurance?
*How do you improve the four components of physical fitness?
*How can individual differences enhance and contribute to group productivity?
*How does frequency, intensity, time, and type of physical activity influence health-related
fitness? How does teamwork and sportsmanship affect game play?

6th grade-8th grade

Standards 19-24
EUs:
*To be successful in game-like settings one must have mature motor skills specific to the sport
and knowledge of basic game strategies.
*It is important to create and follow a personalized plan to stay healthy and physically fit for a
lifetime.
*Participation in physical activities/sports can provide an opportunity for developing an
understanding and respect for differences among people.
EQs:
*Why is it necessary to develop specific sports skills to be successful in a game?
*What basic strategies do I need to use to be successful?
*What does my personal fitness program need to look like to keep me healthy and physically fit
for a lifetime?
*How can individual differences enhance and contribute to group productivity?
*How does strategy enhance performance?
