In

our English class we read two books title

The Catcher in the Rye and The Perks of
Being a Wallflower
In both books we follow two protagonist who
face many issues that many young teens face
such as drug and alcohol
In perks of being a wallflower the protagonist
Charlie faces drug abuse and because of his
decisions, his life starts to fall apart

With

these two great inspiring books we hope

to help young teens make better decisions
when it comes to drug and alcohol abuse
By giving information and introducing young
teens to helpful organizations we plan to
make a difference in our community to help
stop the use of drugs and the consequences
they bring

In

2011, a survey reported that 33% of 8th

graders and 70% of 12th graders had tried
alcohol, and 13% of 8th graders and 40% of
12th graders drank during the past month
By age 15, more than 50 percent of teens
have had at least 1 drink
23.5 million persons aged 12 or older needed
treatment for an illicit drug or alcohol abuse
problem in 2009
Every day in the US, 2,500 youth (12 to 17)
abuse a prescription pain reliever for the
first time.

5,000

young people under the age of 21 die

as a result of underage drinking
This includes 1900 deaths from car crashes,
1,600 as a result of homicides, 300 from
suicide, as well as hundreds from other
injuries such as falls, and drowning
People who start drinking at an early age end
up being alcoholics later in their lives
Memory problems
School problems, such as higher absence and
poor or failing grades

We

talked to a guy named Albert, he helps

teens who use drugs
He runs an organization called
We also contacted NCADD (National Council
on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence of the
San Fernando Valley, Inc.)
They gave us a lot of information over the
phone, about alcohol and drug abuse signs.

Academic

and/or behavioral problems in

school
Changing groups of friends
Less interest in activities and/or appearance
Slurred speech
Coordination Problems
Memory and/or concentration problems

Since

reading the books in our class,we

learned about the struggles young teens face
while growing up and how we can relate it to
the protagonist in the books and the that
struggles they face
People all around the world face drug and
alcohol abuse problems, and by the issue
being in world famous novels its gets
awareness out and helps to stop drug and
alcohol abuse

In

working collaboratively with multiple

groups including one from our school we
have learned helpful information to stop
young teens from doing drugs or alcohol
Our main inspiration for the project were the
two books read in class title the catcher in
the rye and the perks of being a
wallflower
