Assignment 1: Information Literacy

Joshua Umerley
Early Child Development

Susan Neuman did a formal study using the Learn with Homer app, testing its ability to
improve literacy scores of children. The results of her experiment were conclusive that it had
aided the childrens early literacy skills. The results of the study thus prove the apps
effectiveness and lighting the way for others attempting apps based on the same idea. Although
experts dont agree on the appropriate amount of screen time kids should have, parents are
eating up child education apps.

Choosing a Search Engine

Based on my experience using both techcrunch.com and cnn.com to search for emerging
technologies, I can decisively say that one is better than the other. Starting with techcrunch.com I
was pleased to find the article on digits and thought the layout of the site and speed at which I
could find it was fantastic. Although changing gears, whilst utilizing cnn.com I had an
immensely easier time navigating and no sooner than loading the page was the article slapping
me in the face. Id say that in the future cnn.com will be my first stop when researching
emerging technology.

Quality of Source

Yes, iPad Apps Can Help Your Child Learn To Read was a current article posted 2014
October 27. Relating to my topic due to the fact that apps to aid child development are relatively
new and essentially unestablished. John Paul Titlow a technology journalist and a teacher at
Temple University is well known for his incite on technology. The information is backed by the
formal study run by Susan Neuman, an NYU professor of early childhood education and former
U.S. Assistant Sectary of Education. The material seems biased toward apple and only mentions
the iPad but refers to tablets. It was written to try and inform the reader about how iPad apps can
help children to learn to read.

Scholarly Articles

Assignment 1: Information Literacy

Joshua Umerley
Through the CCBC library I managed to find the science/technology tab, the Access
Science database and ProQuest Science Journals. The Access Science database has articles
written by leading figures from the McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Science & Technology thus
suiting my topic of emerging technology.

Comparing Journal and Internet Articles

You cant go wrong utilizing either one of these methods for research purposes, but if
you put them side by side and asked me to choose it wouldnt be difficult. Although the internet
articles on sites like CNN or zdnet.com are easily accessible and very well written they are as
current as this morning, and they seem to lack in the scholarly backing department. Whereas the
very well guarded CCBC library journals arent as easy for just anyone to access they exceed
expectations with a list of accredited references longer than my arm! Placing my confidence in
quality over quantity Id have to back the journals as the greater of the two.
