Electrical Principles & Technologies

I can:
Identify, describe and interpret examples of mechanical, chemical, thermal, electrical and
light energy
Describe evidence of energy transfer and transformation (i.e. mechanical energy
transformed into electrical energy, chemical energy converted to electrical energy and
then to light energy in a flashlight, etc)
Evaluate the use of different electrodes, electrolytes and electrolytic concentrations in
designing electrical storage cells
Construct, use and evaluate devices for transforming mechanical energy into electrical
energy and for transforming electrical energy into mechanical energy
Modify the design of an electrical device, and observe and evaluate resulting changes (i.e.
investigate the effect of changes in the orientation and placement of magnets,
commutator and armature in a St. Louis motor)
Assess the potential danger of electrical devices, by referring to the voltage and current
rating of the devices
Distinguish between safe and unsafe activities
Distinguish between static and current electricity, and identify examples of each
Identify electrical conductors and insulators
Compare the resistance of different materials to electric flow
Use switches and resistors to control electrical flow, and predict the effects of these and
other devices in given applications (i.e. describe how a rheostat works)
Use models to describe the nature of electrical current, and explain the relationship
among voltage, current and resistance
Measure voltage and amperage in circuits
Apply Ohms Law to calculate resistance, voltage and current
Develop, test and troubleshoot circuit designs for a variety of purposes (i.e. parallel and
series circuits)
Draw circuit diagrams
Identify similarities and differences between microelectronic circuits and circuits in a
house
Identify the forms of energy inputs and outputs in a device or system
Measure amperage and voltage, and calculate the number of watts consumed by an
electrical device (P = IV)
Calculate the quantity of energy, in joules, transformed by an electrical device (E = Pt)
Analyze energy devices using the concepts of conservation of energy and efficiency
Compare energy inputs and outputs of a device, and calculate its efficiency (% efficiency =
output/input x 100)
Describe techniques for reducing waste of energy in common household devices
Identify and evaluate sources of electrical energy, including oil, gas, coal, biomass, wind
and solar) (i.e. renewable and non-renewable sources)
Describe the by-products of electrical generation and their impacts on the environment
Identify example uses of electrical technologies and evaluate their benefits and impacts
Identify concerns regarding conservation of energy resources, and evaluate ways to
improve the sustainability of energy use
