Mrs.

Batistes 2014-2015 Class Syllabus

Welcome to one of the most incredible years your child will have in his/her
school career! Fourth graders will have the Leap test and PARCC assessment at the
end of the year. Although this year will require your child to complete many
assignments to achieve Advance or Mastery, I hope to encourage a love of learning
that will last throughout your childs years of schooling. The following information
will make the transition fourth grade an easier one for your child.
Grades/Homework/Classwork
Assessment in every subject will be given weekly. Graded classwork and homework
assignment will be given periodically throughout the nine weeks period. This may
consist of worksheets, quizzes, journal entries, projects, etc. Homework and test
dates will be written on the board everyday for students to copy into their student
planners and refer to at home.
1. Final report card grades will consist of an average of weekly tests, quizzes,
classwork grades, homework grades, and nine weeks exams.
2. The following grading scale will be used for all assignments this school year:
93-100----A

75-84------C

85-92-----B

67-74-----D

0-66-----F

3. Homework is a vital part of the learning process. Students will be expected to

complete the learning assignments and return them the following day unless
otherwise instructed by the teacher. Please check your childs bag daily for
their homework/classwork folder. Please review the contents inside. Often
times the folder will contain more than just the students home learning
assignments. It will sometimes contain information that is intended for the
parent. If a student comes to school with incomplete homework, they will be
kept in a recess to complete it. A new homework chart with worksheets
attached for the week will be given on Monday of every week.
4. Please do everything you can to help your child become organized.

5. If your child will be absent, please make an effort to have a neighbor, a friend,
etc. gather his/her homework from school.

General School Information

1. If your child needs to be transported from school to another place different
from the usual drop off place, be certain that you inform the teacher of this
change by writing a note. Otherwise, your child will be transported home in
his/her usual manner.
2. Parent-teacher conferences are necessary and important. If you need to
meet with me to discuss your childs progress or any concerns that you may
have, please be considerate and call 258-4680 to schedule a conference. My
planning period is 9:20-10:00 daily.

Classroom Rules/Consequences/Rewards
1. It is our belief that children should come to school ready to learn.
Therefore, rules and procedures have been developed in order to create an
environment conducive to learning. Everyday, students are expected to
follow all rules. Unfortunately, there are times when children may not follow
the rules or procedures. Therefore consequences have been developed and
are strictly enforced. Please refer to the Positive Behavior sheet for expected
behaviors.
2. In order to keep parents informed of their childs behavior, a daily
behavior chart is included in each childs homework folder. It is expected
that parents will review this chart everyday and sign their initials in the
appropriate space daily. Each parent is encouraged to discuss the results
of this chart daily with their child. Students who exhibit appropriate
behavior in and outside the classroom will be rewarded. These rewards
consist of cougar cash, homework passes, school-wide parties, weekly
prizes, etc.

Weekly Test Folders

Test papers and classwork papers will be sent home every Wednesday unless
uncontrollable circumstances occur. Your child will be responsible for bringing
these papers to and from school. These papers should be reviewed with your child,
signed by you, the parent/guardian, and returned to school by Friday. If a student
does not return his/her folder with a parent/guardian s signature, he/she
will not receive a new set of papers until the old set is returned. This is an ideal
way for you to keep up with your childs academic progress. Please be on the look
for these test and classwork papers each week. If for some reason you do not receive
them, please feel free to contact us. Grades will also be posted on Powerschool for
you to view regularly.
Make-up Work
If a student is absent, it is the students responsibility to see me for the work he/she
missed. Makeup work must be completed within three days of returning to school. If
the student was absent on the day of a test, the same procedure applies.

Reading and Math

There are two new programs this school year for Reading and Math. Please utilize
websites on weekly homework chart to assist with Eureka Math. Please use study
guide to review with your child for Reading.

Science Journals and Labs

Science journals and lab experiments will be implemented in the Science lessons.
These activities will be used for test, quiz, or project grades. Please make sure your
child takes these activities seriously and give 100 percent to each one. Your child
will be required to complete a Science project for a grade. A grade will be given for
presentation to the class and the correct procedure and project board. A Science

fair object must have an experiment in order to be considered. I will send more
information on a later date.
Social Studies Projects
Projects will be given throughout the year on various topics.

Class Parties/Celebrations
There will be class celebrations for holidays or anything special we may have at
school. A letter will be sent home to parents prior to the event. If you would like to
celebrate your childs birthday pre-packaged treats may be sent to school or contact
teacher prior to the event.

If you have any questions are concerns throughout the year, please contact me by
note, a phone call during my planning period time-9:20-10:00, or through email. My
email address is dbatiste@stjames.k12.la.us .
