Reflective Analysis of Portfolio Artifact

Rationale/Reflection
NAEYC Standard:
STANDARD 6. BECOMING A PROFESSIONAL
Candidates prepared in early childhood degree programs identity and conduct themselves as members of the
early childhood profession. They know and use ethical guidelines and other professional standards related to
early childhood practice. They are continuous, collaborative learners who demonstrate knowledgeable,
reflective and critical perspectives on their work, making informed decisions that integrate knowledge from a
variety of sources. They are informed advocates for sound educational practices and policies. (NAEYC, 2010)

Brief Description of Evidence:

During the fall semester of 2012, I was offered the position of Director at the Primrose School of
Noblesville. During my first few months in my new position, I had to take over the planning and
implementation of staff meetings and training requirements. While doing this I had to complete a lot of
training by attending conferences, including renewing my CDA, and researching a variety of sources in order to
better prepare myself for the responsibility of my position and the schools needs.

Analysis of What I Learned:

Through the completion of my training to date and collaboration with other directors and management
teams, I feel very confident in my abilities to lead a school in providing excellence in early childhood
education. I have learned that it is very important to always seek guidance and understanding of early
childhood policies and practices. It is also very important to reflect on decisions that are made and make a
plan to improve upon the next time.

How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the NAEYC Standard:

I take great pride in the procedures, practices, and policies that are in place for early childhood
professionals to follow and strive to meet. I feel that I exemplify these characteristics by the quality in my
work and job performance. I feel my competency of this NAEYC standard can be fulfilled by my membership
to NAEYC, completed trainings and education, collaboration with other leaders in the field, and my experience
of being a director of a program.
