Reflective Analysis of Portfolio Artifact

Rationale/Reflection
NAEYC Standard: STANDARD 7. EARLY CHILDHOOD FIELD EXPERIENCES
Field experiences and clinical practice are planned and sequenced so that candidates develop the
knowledge, skills and professional dispositions necessary to promote the development and learning of young
children across the entire developmental period of early childhood in at least two of the three early childhood
age groups (birthage 3, 3 through 5, 5 through 8 years) and in the variety of settings that offer early education
(early school grades, child care centers and homes, Head Start programs).
Brief Description of Evidence:
As part of my ECED 233 Emerging Literacy course during the spring semester of 2014, I did multiple
observations and a concept of print assignment. The observations were done in two different age groups; infant
and toddlers and school age (third grade). I completed the concept of print assignment with a four year old girl.
Analysis of What I Learned:
From completing these observations and assessment, I was able to gain experience in multiple age
groups. Being in the different age groups allowed me to see how each age group was different. I saw a huge
difference in childs expectations, wants, and needs in the classroom varying by grade level. All three
environments were unique. While observing each setting, I was taking notes on the various amount of props
used for learning supplies in each classroom. I learned responsibilities that each educator had. Some were the
same and some were different according to which grade level they taught in. I was privileged to see how each
age grouped learned differently. All of these ideas I have gained from this artifact can benefit my lessons and
activities in my future classroom.
How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the NAEYC Standard:
This artifact demonstrates my competency in this standard because I am now able to adapt to the age
group and know how to promote learning in the best way to benefit their childs learning. This class helped me
realize and notice the difference between each grade levels wants and needs. I now understand that each grade
level of children thrive best in different environments, which help them get the most out of the teachers
teaching. I have now seen the way each child reacts to their environments and teachers at different grade levels.
