Housing (Shelter)
is a Basic Human
Need

Background:
You are all residents of the Land of Laguna. Some of the richest citizens of the Land of
Laguna have created a fund to lend money to other citizens so that they can buy
houses. They call this the Joatzel Fund. When someone takes out a loan (borrows
money) from the Joatzel Fund, they must pay off their loan within five years of buying
a house.
Scenario:
You are gathered today for the annual meeting of the Joatzel Fund. You must discuss
what to do about borrowers who cannot pay off their loans.

Questions to consider:
1.
Should borrowers have more time to pay off their loans?
2.
Should you forgive the debt of borrowers who cannot pay off their loans (not make
them pay all the money that they owe)?

Think. Pair. Share.

What do you feel should happen?
Should everyone have to repay their loans?
Why or why not?

Can you think of any other solutions?
