Please follow all the Instructions to Candidates given on the cover page of the answer book.
All parts of a question should be answered consecutively. Each answer should start from a fresh page.
Mobile phones and computers of any kind should not be brought inside the examination hall.
Use of any unfair means will result in severe disciplinary action.

Q.1

Mention any one commonly occurring example where the following control modes
are used.
(i)
On-Off mode
(ii) Proportional mode
[1x 2 =2]

Q.2.(a) Design a proportional integral controller with a proportional band of 40% and an
integration gain of 0.15%/(%.s). The 420 mA input converts to a 0.4 to 2.0 V signal
and the output to be 0 10 V. Draw the complete circuit diagram and calculate the
values of all the components required.
[10]
(b) A type-J thermocouple with a 0C reference is used to control temperature between
100C and 200C. Design a PI controller with a 40% proportional band and a 0.08minute reset time. The final control element requires a 0 10 V range. Type-J
thermocouple outputs 5.27 mV at 100C and 10.78 mV at 200C.
[10]
Q.3

A displacement sensor has an input range of 0.0 to 3.0 cm and a standard supply
voltage VS = 0.5V. Using the calibration results given in the table, estimate using
graph sheet:
(a) the maximum non-linearity as a percentage of f.s.d.
(b) the slope of the ideal straight line.
[6 + 4 = 10]
Displacement (cm)
Output Voltage(mV) VS=0.5V
Output Voltage(mV) VS=0.6V

Q.4(a) Explain with a neat sketch, the method by which a flapper-nozzle system is
used to generate proportional action in a pneumatic controller.
[6]
(b) Describe a pneumatic controller with proportional-plus-integral action.
Explain clearly how these control actions are generated in this controller. [7]
(c) What is a pneumatic relay? Describe with a neat sketch, the working of a
reverse acting relay.
[5]
Q.5.

Analyze a pressure measurement system that uses a pressure transducer with

transfer function 104 /Pa, a signal conditioner with transfer function 20
mV/, and a display with transfer function 20 mm/mV. Draw a neat block
diagram of the given system indicating inputs and outputs clearly and find
overall transfer function.
