Fabrizio Corneli

The artwork I researched is called Dreaming Woman with Animals which was put on show
in 2010. It shows large scale sculptures lit with lamps to create the shadows of a womans
face along with an owl, mouse, rabbit and fox. The light used isnt coloured to create a
simplistic black and white effect.
Fabrizio used folded copper to create various filters/templates for the light to be cast
through and together show an image. Without the title the sculptures meaning could be
open for interpretation but judging by its name I think it is meant to show a woman
dreaming about animals and wildlife. There also seems to be some sort of food chain linkn
as owls eat mice and foxes eat rabbits, I think there could be some meaning of humans
being superior. I couldnt find any similar examples so I assume the piece is quite unique.
I think he chose the subject matter he did because animals and humans are both actually
quite fragile and the way the shadows look against the white walls appear to express that in
quite a beautiful way. He used copper because its relatively easy to sculpt with and its solid
therefore doesnt let light through. If it did the shadows wouldnt appear as thee would be
nothing blocking the light so his sculpture wouldnt be effective.
Researching this particular art was helpful for our project as it suggests different ways of
creating shadows and a unique idea of ways to use light.
