Summary
This book is devoted to the theory of Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMI) and their
application to the analysis and design of linear control systems. The notation
used in the book is given in Chapter 1. Chapter 2 contains some basic facts
from the theory of linear multivariable control systems. Chapter 3 is devoted to
the convex analysis and LMI. The Linear Matrix Inequalities are defined and
their properties are studied. The application of LMI to the solution of some
basic analysis and design problems for linear systems is shown. Methods for
solving LMIs are presented and the interior point algorithm is discussed. In
Chapter 4 we consider in details the application of LMI to the determination
of stability regions, quadratic stability analysis for different uncertainty models,
matrix Riccati equations and analysis of H2 performance. In Chapter 5 we consider
the H design of linear systems done by using of LMI. First we describe bilinear
matrix inequalities, solvability of continuous-time controllers and controller reconstruction. The determination of controller matrices is described in full and the
connection with other central controllers is shown. The numerical aspects of the
design are discussed. Then we study in the same sequence the discrete-time H
design. In Chapter 6 we describe the functions of LMI Control Toolbox for analysis
and design of robust control systems. In Chapter 7 we show the application of this
toolbox to the design of robust controller for the mass/damper/spring system. A
multiobjective design of this system is done for different performance criteria.
The comparison of the systems with different controls shows the advantage of the
controller obtained by multiobjective optimization over the standard H design.
Chapter 8 of the book contains several useful appendices devoted to sets and
functions, metric spaces and linear spaces and linear operators.
