Materials and Resources: (1) Chart paper (2) Edmodo and Sketch application
on IPad (3) Two paragraphs to find the main idea and details (4) Projector (5) Ice
cream cone graphic organizer (6) Brown bags for each group (7) Items with
things in common to place in the brown bags
Lesson Introduction

your students in the
topic?

Procedure

The teacher will introduce the lesson by going

over what the students already learned about main
idea from the week before. Once the students and
the teacher discuss what theyve learned, the teacher
will tell his/her own personal story (that will be written
on chart paper) and let the students discuss aloud as
a class to figure out what the main idea of the story is
and what details support the main idea.
Following the lesson introduction, the teacher will
instruct the students to grab their IPads (by table).
The teacher will then place a short paragraph under
the projector and model to the students how to find
the main idea. The teacher will go through the
paragraph step by step explaining his/her thought
process and will list the details and main idea beside
the appropriate section of the ice cream cone
organizer on the chart paper while explaining the
process. Once the teacher is done modeling how to
find the main idea of his/her paragraph, the teacher
will place a new paragraph under the projector. The

students will be asked to turn their IPads on and go
to Edmodo application to open up the ice cream cone
graphic organizer file. Once they find the file they will
open it in their sketch application that will allow them
to type or write their answers in the graphic
organizer. The teacher will use the projector to show
the students exactly how to get to the file on their
IPad. The teacher will then instruct them to use a
similar thought process as the model example to find
the main idea and details of so they can complete the
graphic organizer using the new paragraph as an
assessment.
Lesson Closure
Once the students have finished filling out their

by having the students participate in the Brown Bag
Main Idea Activity. First, the teacher will model how
he/she wants the students to find the main idea of the
bag and a few safety rules. Then, the students will
work together in their groups to pull out the items of
their bag and discuss what the main idea of the bag
is. Once the groups have come to a conclusion, each
group will have the opportunity to share what was in
their bag and what the main idea of their bag was
along with an explanation.
