Krakatoa 1883

1883
In 1883 a volcano erupted in the Dutch East Indie that it is now called Indonesia. The volcano first erupted on
August 26 1883 and on August 27 1883 two thirds of Krakatoa island collapsed in a chain and most of the
island was destroyed including its surroundings and this was all caused by some titanic explosions. Activity
was reported all the way up until February 1883. The action really started in may of 1883 and it was felt as
far as Australia. Krakatoa is a volcanic island that is located in the Sauda Straight and it sits between Java and
Sumatra Island in Indonesia. The explosion is known as the loudest explosion in modern history. The sound
was heard and recorded by barographs all over the world. The Volcano created a tsunami that killed 36,000
people in low surrounding areas on the neighboring islands. In 1927 a new island came up called Ana
Karkatoa and it is an offspring of the island. At 12:53 Pm on August 26 1883 Krakatoa erupted. Some
powerful explosions were heard early in the morning starting at 6:36am all the way to 10:45am. The island
was 23 kilometers and it was at the height of 450 meters above sea level and after the blast the island was
leveled down to 250 meters above sea level.

Global effects
The skies went dark after the Volcano erupted. The sky was blackened all over the world for years and
also the Volcano produced amazing sunsets for the human race to see all over the world. In New York
the fire department had to be called when people watched the brilliant fire red sunset. In Auckland which
was 7,767 km away they had recorded two meter high waves and a bank of pumice washed up in
Durban, South Africa a year after the explosion happened. Volcanic dust and gas spewed into the
atmosphere and did a full circle around the earth in two weeks producing amazing sunset for everybody
to see worldwide. In May there were explosions every five to ten minutes and steam ash rose into the air
hitting eleven kilometers in height. When Krakatoa Erupted ashes rose up to 36 kilometers high into the
sky. Instead of the regular temperature of twenty seven degrees it was eighteen degrees on august 27

th

1883. Some of the local effects around the island and other sea lanes were that sailors were seeing
astounding views of the eruption also the sound even broke some of the sailors ear drums because the
sound of the eruption was so loud. The tsunami that was created by the volcano eruption sent waves up

to 120 feet and it crashed back down on the nearby coastlines of the other islands. Those islands were
inhabited by the human race. Some distant effect were that Light pieces of pumice started washing up on
the coast line of Madagascar and the islands off of the cotenant of Africa and some pieces of rock even
had pieces of human and animal skeleton intergraded it to them. Some of the Physical effects were that
windows were broken, and shop windows were broken. Sailors reported their decks being covered with
ash three days after the eruption. For Environmental the temperature dropped from a regular twenty
seven degrees to eighteen degrees and there was total darkness for three days. Also it rained volcanic
ash and pumice. Some economic effects were that structures and crops were demolished and 165
villages were demolished. The eruption brought species of plants and animals to extinction, crops were
destroyed and herds of domesticated animals were killed and they were what man rose for meat and milk
so when they were killed man didnt know what to do. When the Volcano erupted it sent a shock wave
which created a tsunami that was created by s-waves with the boats out at sea they would not know that
a tsunami was being created from the explosion. Starvation would of plagued islands and villages and
they would have no to little food also for the rest of the world finances would be down on the world
market. Since crops were destroyed and animals were killed it impacts culture for example maybe the
people warship a god and maybe when the volcano erupted maybe the people who lived on the islands
thought that they were being punished or something. When krakatoa erupted in 1883 it had devastating
effects on the world and surrounding islands.
