Students will watch this short video of traditional American Indian dance to
grab their attention.
Today we will be reading informational texts and making connections
between the texts while supporting the connections with information from
the text.
The teacher will pass out a copy of each of the two passages below to each
student. http://www.ducksters.com/history/native_american_navajo.php
http://www.ducksters.com/history/native_american_cherokee.php The
teacher will read the first text to students. The teacher may stop and point
out information or ask question as he/she is reading to the students. After
reading the first text the teacher will ask the students comprehension
questions about the texts. The teacher will then read the second passage to
students. The teacher may stop and point out information or ask questions
about the texts. After reading the second text the teacher will ask students
comprehension question about the text. Now that both passages have been

8. Assessment Results of
all objectives/skills:

Students will work together in their grouped tables to make one venn
diagram to show the connections between the texts. The teacher will then
walk through some possibilities for similarities and differences between the
two texts. The teacher will also show a poster that represents what is
expected of them but the poster should be done on a different topic.
The students will continue with the venn diagram that they began with the
teacher in the guided practice. The students will be making a mini poster
where they will write down the connections that they made between the
two texts. The students will make this mini poster attractive so they may
also draw pictures to display a connection, however they should label what
connection the picture is displaying. The students should also write where in
the passages they found the information to make the connections beside of
their connection (section name would be sufficient) The students will be
asked to write or draw at least 5 connections on their mini poster. They may
make connections between groups, ideas, concepts, etc in the texts.
The independent practice will serve as the assessment.
