My artistic piece represents the infectious disease, Whooping cough.
The background shows
the bacteria, Bordetella pertussis, which causes this disease. I chose to include the pink ciliated cells because the bacteria affect ciliated cells that line the respiratory tract. They release a toxin that destroys the cilia. These cilia which are coated with a thin layer of mucus, prevent dust and particles from entering the lungs. The cilia move the mucus away from the lungs. When they are destroyed, particles can enter the lungs. DTaP is a vaccine that is available to help reduce the spread of whooping cough. As of October 2014, in San Diego, 62% of hospitalized patients were infants less than one year old.
