Damaging Media

By: Madison McNutt

Body Project Outline

Media Introduction
Journal One and Journal Two
Photo Correction Video
Current Culture vs. A new culture
Findings From Survey

Conclusion

Why The Media?

Unrealistic goals are being set
Value of women is becoming less

Media is powerful
Media consumption: 31 hours a week watching
TV, 4 hours a week reading magazines, and 10
hours a week online
Emotionally and Physically damaging

Victoria Secret Models

Journal One
Ask yourself: How did the victoria secret models
make you feel?
My answer: Overall, I felt out of shape and less
beautiful. I feel that way every time I see a
commercial and magazines from victoria secret.
Even though Im considered skinny their bodies are
still better than mine in my own eyes.
After learning about all of the photo correcting and
the lies that the media shows us, I know that photo
isnt realistic and has been edited.

Journal One Cont.

Effects of Negative Views of Our Own Self
53% of 13 year old girls are unhappy with their
bodies
65% of women/girls have eating disorders
US women spend 12k-15k a year on beauty
products and service

I can see exactly how that one picture of victoria

secrete models can cause women to reach those
numbers

Dove Models

Journal Two
Ask yourself: How did the Dove models make
you feel?
My answer: In general, I felt happy about myself.
Not because I felt like I looked better than them,
but because their bodies were realistic and
relatable. Everyone has different bodies and
shapes and this photo makes you feel good about
that.
I think these are the type of photos that should be
shown in the media more often to encourage
instead of bringing women down.

Journal Two Cont.

New positive images like the Dove photo makes a
difference in our culture
It stands out because its not the typical stereo
type
It illustrates the true beauty of real women- Not
the Beauty Myth

Beautiful images, like the last one, is not

reproduced
Overall feeling is encouraging

Powerful Video: Photos

Reproduced

Comments on Video
Within Minutes that womans photo was
reproduced completely different
Changes made in video

Longer hair
Bigger eyes
Longer legs
Thinner stomach, arms, waist
Clear skin, makeup added
Bigger lips

Comments Cont.
The womans before and after picture was a huge
difference
The sad part is that the woman was beautiful
before, but with those corrections made it
produced an after photo that was an unrealistic
beautiful person
The media images that are produced are
anything, but realistic

Our
Current
Culture
Sex sells in
advertising
20% of teens have
sex before the age
of 14

Path to Power for

women= Sexuality

A New
Culture
Instead of media
making women feel
anxious, women
should feel
empowered
Value should be in our
education, power,
leadership, etc.
Old stereotype (Body
image) Vs. New
stereotype (Leader)

Service-Learning
Research
Showing what the media is doing to young girls
currently.
We have read and watched videos of other girls
stories, but this project provides an example in my
own home town
8 Surveys completed by girls under 12 years old

2 Surveys completed by girls over 12 years old

Service-Learning Cont.
80% of the girls were under the age of 12
Almost half of those girls have already been
impacted by the media. Imagine what the
numbers will be like in a few more years
Half of the girls heard about staying in shape. Not
only will that number increase as time goes on,
but will be achieved by unhealthy habits

Conclusion: Their mind is being shaped by their

environment daily, which includes media

Conclusion
If our culture does not begin taking steps towards
change in our media the women are going to
suffer emotionally and physically.
From my personal experience, the unrealistic
body images are becoming more unattainable and
more pressuring.
If changes arent made the statistics of eating
disorders, sexual activity, money in beauty
industry, and overall well being of women are
going to rise to an all-time high.
