Course Outline Assignment

Course Name: 5TH grade Mathematics

Course Length: 6 Weeks
Course Type: Classroom- Web/Technology Enhanced
Average Student: 5th grade middle school students who are familiar with basic math skills,
geometrical shapes, and basic computer skills.
Content Analysis:

Students should have access to textbook

Students should have knowledge of basic math skills and geometrical shapes
Students should have basic computer skills and Internet Browsing

General Goals:

Answer basic math problems through on-line worksheets.

Identify geometrical shapes
Learn how to find Perimeter and Area of geometrical shapes.

Enhancing Learning:
This course will give students the experience they need to advance to the next math course. By
practicing math problems, they will be able to give the correct answer to advance to the next
lesson. This course will be in the classroom, but will be web/technology enhanced. The students
will have practice time each day in the classroom before taking math test.

General Course Assessments

Multiple Choice Quizzes and Final Exam: These will be giving during the weeks to test
different shapes, formulas, and other foundational information on-line. The last week of the
course a final exam will be given on the computer.
Weekly discussions: Students will periodically answer discussion questions in the on-line
discussion board.
Group Board Work: Students will have different problems to work finding area and perimeter
in groups and one student from each group will answer the math problem on the board.

Lessons and Materials

Module 1: Introduction of Shapes, Area, and Perimeter (Week 1)

This Module will be used on the computer for Discussion Board and Quiz

Introducing the 5 shapes by asking the class, What is your favorite shape? or What do
you know about shapes?
Defining of what area and perimeter are https://www.khanacademy.org/math/prealgebra/measurement/perimeter/v/introduction-to-perimeter
Scavenger hunt of shapes in the classroom
On Thursday, the first discussion question will be given to be answered in the discussion
board

On Friday, a quiz on the description of the 5 shapes and formulas for area and perimeter
on each shape will be given on the computer

Module 2: Square and Rectangle (Week 2)

Introduction of square and rectangles by having examples available for the class to see. I
will ask questions such as, Can you tell me what each one is? How are the two are
alike?
Measure squares and rectangles by having the class use their ruler to measure different
examples
Use measurements to find area and perimeter https://www.khanacademy.org/math/prealgebra/measurement/perimeter/v/comparing-area-and-perimeter The class will watch a
video about area and perimeter of squares and rectangles.
On Friday, students will have multiples choice quiz on squares and rectangles

Module 3: Circle (Week 3)

This Module will be computer based

Introduction of circles http://www.khanacademy.org/math/geometry/basicgeometry/circum_area_circles/v/area-of-a-circle

Measure different circle examples using measuring tape/ string
Use measurements to find area and perimeter
http://www.mathworksheets4kids.com/circles/area-circumference/circumference-mixedhard1.pdf
Wednesday will have a Discussion Board question such as, What is the difference
between radius and diameter of a circle?
Thursday, students will be placed in groups to answer the group board work question and
one student from each group will have two minutes to answer the question.
Friday will have computer based multiple choice quiz on information learned for the
week

Module 4: Triangle (Week 4)

Introduction of triangles by asking, Can someone tell me what are these shapes called?
I will have examples of triangles for the class to see.
Find different examples on campus to measure using a ruler or tape measure.
Use measurements to find area and perimeter of examples
Tuesday will have group work and solve problems on board
Friday will be multiple choice quiz on information covered this week

Module 5: Octagon (Week 5)

Introduction of Octagon Can anyone tell me what this shape is? How many sides does
a stop sign have?
Draw and label octagon on white paper. The students will use their rulers to find the
measurements of their octagon and find the area and perimeter of their shape.
Monday will be DB about the octagon. What is an easy way to remember how many
sides an octagon has?
