Texans not happy w/Santa Anna and tensions

are rising. The first conflict between Mexican
troops and Texan colonists came at
Gonzales, Texas on October 2, 1835. Word
reached the Mexican Commander
Ugartechea that locals in Gonzales had a
cannon so he ordered the people of Gonzales
to surrender the small brass cannon locals
REFUSED. Mexican soldiers were sent in to
take the cannon by force by this time locals
had buried the cannon in a peach orchard.
Texan forces arrived at Gonzales to help,
then they unburied the cannon and mounted
it on a wagon.

Texans decorated the front of the cannon

with a white flag that bore the words.

The War Begins

Causes
Santa Annas failure to follow the Constitution of 1824
rising tensions between Texans and the Mexican govt.
demand that U.S. settlers at Gonzales hand over their cannon

Battle of Gonzales,
October 2, 1835

Effects

Texas rebel victory

started a war between Texas and the Mexican government from which Texans
could not turn back
increased the resolution and confidence of the Texas rebels

On October 10, 1835 the 1st offensive attack

occurred in Goliad an all volunteer Texan army
attacked a Mexican Army and was successful!!!
The large Mexican army was sent to put down the
Texan rebellion only to find themselves losing.
How is this significant to the Texas Revolution????
It helped them (the Texans) obtain a large
amount of military supplies and helped the
volunteer army grow because of the victory
they gained confidence.

On November 26, 1835 scouts reported

that 100 Mexican troops were transporting
silver to pay troops. 40 Texas cavalry led by
Jim Bowie ambushed the soldiers capturing
the animals. When Texans opened the bags
looking to find silver, they found grass or
hay being brought to feed the horses.

Why do you think this mistake was still a

positive outcome???

On December 5-9, 1835 reports said that Cos

troops were weak and disorganized. Ben Milam
and 300 Texans attacked and after a long
destructive battle the Mexican troops were driven
to the center of town. Surrounded, General Cos
surrendered.
Texans allowed Cos and troops to leave San
Antonio.
Was this smart??? Many Texans believed conflict
was over Santa Anna had other plans!

Daily lives interrupted

Both armies took food, livestock, and other
supplies from townspeople
Siege of SA TX troops destroyed many
homes homes were left in ruin

Meeting to organize, discuss, and establish a

provisional (temporary) govt.
Decided to issue the Declaration of Nov. 7,
1835

Persuasive Flyer/Pamphlet
Imagine you are Stephen F. Austin or Sam Houston and you are in
desperate need of soldiers for the Texas Army. You are going to plea to
the US settlers to come join the TX army and help the fight for
independence. ..in other words you are creating a recruiting poster for
the Texas army.
Your flyer should include a title, an illustration (s) why Texans are
fighting, and what do they receive for joining.
Use colored pencils and make sure to be neat.
