Topic Type 1 & 2 Diabetes (Parts 2,3 of 4)

Allotted Time 2 lessons, 45 minutes each

Cite sources used to develop this plan:

1. Rationale: Why is this lesson relevant at this time with these students?
-

Compare and contrast Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes to create awareness of the disease. This could be helpful
if a classmate has diabetes or as an extension to a nutrition unit.
To create a safe environment where students can ask questions and discuss diabetes. Stress that this is a
new topic and a lot of people dont completely understand it, so it is ok to ask questions.

2. Provincial Learning Outcome(s): What IRP outcome(s) does this lesson develop?

3. Assessment
Lesson Outcome
What will students learn?
Students will learn to
compare and contrast type 1
and type 2 diabetes.

Sources of Evidence
What product or action will show
what students have learned?
Students will complete a Venn
diagram and worksheet with a partner
as well as brainstorming and
completing these as a class.

Criteria
What will you look for in this
evidence?
We will look for pairs working well
together and helping each other,
being respectful. We will also look
for participation (this could simply
be in the form of asking lots of
questions).

4. Resources, Material and Preparation: What resources, materials and preparation are required?
- Handout (one for each pair): http://positivelyaging.uthscsa.edu/curriculum/bittersweet/pa10pdf/1002LSN.pdf
- Projector for watching youtube videos
- Have Venn Diagram outline and worksheet questions already up on the board (cover until needed if possible), or
have these written out on large sheets of paper.

Teaching/Learning Sequence: What steps and activities are you

going to use to help students acquire and practice the knowledge,
skills and/or attitudes needed to meet the outcome?

Discuss Warning signs of Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes (on

whiteboard; leave on whiteboard for entire lesson)
Type 1 Diabetes: Frequent urination, unusual thirst, extreme hunger,
unusual weight loss, extreme fatigue, irritability
Type 2 Diabetes: Any of the type 1 symptoms, frequent infections,
blurred vision, cuts/bruises that are slow to heal, tingling/numbness
in the hands/feet, recurring skin, gum or bladder infections.
Treating diabetes: To survive, people with type 1 diabetes must have
insulin delivered by a syringe or an insulin pump. Many people with

type 2 diabetes can manage their blood glucose by following a

healthy meal plan and exercise program, losing excess weight, and
taking oral medication. Many people with diabetes also need to take
medications to control their cholesterol and blood pressure.
When you eat, your body turns food into sugars, or glucose. At that
point, your pancreas is supposed to release insulin. Insulin servces as
a key to open your cells, to allow the glucose to enter and allow you
to use the glucose for energy. But with diabetes, this system does not
work. Several major things can go wrong, causing the onset of
diabetes. Type 1 and type 2 diabetes are the most common forms of
the disease.

Students will complete this Venn Diagram and worksheet in their desk
partners (or pick partners for them close to where their desks
are)(one handout for each pair):

Closure: How will you solidify the learning that has taken place and
deepen the learning process?

Class discussion: one student from each group add a point to the
Venn Diagram on the whiteboard, and answer worksheet questions
together as a class (unfinished groups may fill in answers in their own
booklets)

5. Accommodations (adaptations, extensions, other): How will you plan for students who have
learning/behaviour difficulties or require enrichment?
-

If class finishes early introduce the closure lesson (the play), or fine tune the sheets on each type of diabetes (from
previous lesson)
