In order to manage children

well, we must borrow their
eyes and hearts, see and feel
as they do, and judge them
from their own point of
view.
~ Eugenie de Guerin

Good management involves the

prevention of problems; a
carefully laid-out physical
environment is the first step.
~Jere Brophy and Thomas Good

CLASSROOM FLOOR
PLAN

High traffic areas are free from

congestion
Students are always visible to
the teacher
Storage space and necessary
materials are readily accessible
Students can easily see
instructional displays and
presentations

Classroom Floor Plan

Routines are the backbone of daily

classroom life. They facilitate teaching
and learningRoutines dont just make
your life easier, they save valuable
classroom time. And whats most
important, efficient routines make it
easier for students to learn and achieve
more.
`Linda Shalaway

CLASSROOM
PROCEDURES

Procedures are a method or

process for how things are to
get done in the classroom.
The most effective teacher
established clear and specific
procedures governing student
behaviors prior to the first day
of school
The most effective classroom
managers teach their
procedures to students just as
they teach any other content.
A student is generally not
penalized for not following a
procedure or rewarded if
procedure is followed.

Classroom Procedures

A classroom environment that is

welcoming, accepting, calm, caring,
and safe, a community where
children enjoy success, feel
understood, and respect each other,
can go a long way toward influencing
behavior.
~Adele M. Brodkin, Ph. D

MANAGING BEHAVIOR

Rules
Observable
Consequences should be directly tied to
rules (positive and reductive)

Use a positive group contingency (use

peer influences to your advantage for a
win-win)
You should have pre-planned
consequences for chronic rule breakers

Social skills:

Tough kids are chronologically behind

their peers in social skills
Tough kids are quickly rejected by nondisabled peers (45 min.)
Tough kids go through friends very
quickly and try to dominate social
interactions
Tough kids need effective social skills
training

We all want to be liked and

respected, and be able to get
along with others. Having and
using positive social skills paves
the way for an easier, more
successful life in all areas.
~Unknown

Social Skills

If discipline has to be used to:

o Assist students in knowing they are
cared for. I care enough to show you a

better way
o Help students know they have violated
the rights of others.
o Provide students with new skills.

Prime time in a school is the first

few moments in a class. If you
blow these moments, you blow
the impression, the sale, and the
success of a class.
~ Harry K. Wong
