On the 27th of February Dnepropetrovsk region is celebrating the eightieth

anniversary of its creation. At the present stage of its development,
Dnepropetrovsk rightfully holds leading positions in economy, science and
culture.
Occupying 5,3% of the territory of Ukraine and making 7,4% of its
population, Dnepropetrovsk produces 100% of manganese ore,
81,9% of iron ore and 75,4% of pipes. Dnepropetrovsk region has
significant reserves of coal and lignite and has potential for
successful development. Coal reserves, which are in the region,
make up more than 21 billion tons.

Western Donbass is a coal field in the range of Dnipropetrovsk and Kharkiv

regions. Western Donbass was sufficiently explored in 1950-1960. The
largest coal-mining centers are Pavlograd, Ternovka and Pershotravensk. In
total there are 10 mines. On the territory of the basin were identifies about
40 layers with a working power of 0.6 - 1.6 m, which are located at the depth
of 400 - 1800 m. The coal there is high-qualitied, it is easily enriched.
Industrial reserves are 699.2 million tonnes. This represents a supply of coal for
about 56 years. In 1829, Russian geologist Kovalevsky suggested continuation
of the Donetsk coal deposits of the shield to the West. In 1833, geologist
Ivanitsky developed the Kovalevsky hypothesis.

From 1924 until the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, Soviet specialists held a more thorough study
of the subsurface of the region. In 1949 it was finally established that the coal-bearing layers of the
western part of the Donetsk Ridge have a commercial value. In 1951 the USSR Council of
Ministers adopted a resolution about the beginning of a detailed geological survey in the west of the
Donetsk Basin and the construction of an experimental mine in Ternovka. Construction of the
village Shahterskoe began in 1954, in 1955 - the construction of the mine "Western Donbass" 1. In
1959 first tons of coal at the mine "Ternovskaya" were received.

Today, "DTEK Pavlogradvugyllya" is the largest coal mine in Ukraine. The company consists of 10 mines,
23 business units, 57 social facilities. The company team consists of more than 25,000 people.
The annual production of the Pavlogradvugillya mine in 2004 has increased from 11,4 million tons to
15,5 million tons in 2010 and over 15,7 million tons in 2011. Herewith the productivity of the miners
work is growing invariably. In year 2005 it was 27,5 tons on one worker per month, and according to
calculations in year 2010 it has almost doubled and reached 50,1 ton per month. Average salary in the
miner union has increased by 3,8 times in 7 years.

Four-time increase of investments in health and safety - from 28 billion USD in 2004 to USD 112
million - has allowed in almost three times to reduce working injuries on the background of a
tangible growth in coal production. Today the company continues working on the implementation of
the advanced mining equipment and upgrading an existing one.
Over the last 5 years "Pavlogradvugillya" gave more than 16.5 million USD for the solution of
urgent social problems in cities and districts of Dnepropetrovsk region in the framework of the
social partnership "DTEK Pavlogradvugillya" and local authorities. As a result, in a number of regional
and local hospitals modern equipment has appeared, material and technical base of of
educational establishments was improved, comfortable conditions for esthetic education and physical
development of children was created.

Today, "Pavlogradvugyllya" is the largest company of coal mining. For years

of exploitation there were mined 371 000 000 480 600 tons of coal
and 4318.4 km of mine workings were passed.
On the example of one of the regions we can see that Dnepropetrovsk is
developing and confidently moving forward despite the difficulties and
problems. I am proud that I live in the Dnipropetrovsk region - the
leading region of Ukraine.
