1. Colbert promotes the advantages of overseas trade. Remember this was Louis XIVs Chief
Minister who wrote the book on MERCANTILISM. Cover the 5 Ws and also indicate who he
admires from this reading and the nation that he feels France is far greater. What elements of
Mercantilism does he promote in this primary source?
2. Saint-Simon describes Louis XIV ! The Duke of Saint Simon was a regular visitor at the court
of the French King Louis XIV! His memoirs are famous since they provide an insight of the
court at Versailles. ( required reading at most universities) Read this excerpt and cover your
5 Ws be sure to find the characteristics that made this King the symbol of Absolutism in 17 th
century Europe. Indicate P.O.V. as well !
3. Hobbes describes the natural state of War ! One of the greatest political philosophers in
European History wrote his book Leviathan and in this excerpt provides an insight of the state
and War ! What is the message that he delivers ? Plus your 5Ws POV - Need to remember
Hobbes and Leviathan!! Does he remind you of anyone (In European History) !
4. The English Bill of Rights (1689) That is 1689 ! 100 YEARS before our own ! Read, analyze, and
compare this with the U.S. Bill of Rights. This document is considered one of the greatest
statements of Liberty in history. Explain list (3) of its most important principles! This is part
of those APPS we discussed the first week of the term .
