Executive Summary

In line with the Georgia Tech Strategic Vision and Plan of becoming the leading
university of the 21st century, Georgia Tech should make all attempts to excel in not
only academics but also the classroom environment by taking an active learning
approach with the students. This will help enhance the quality of teaching and provide
students with opportunities to practice what they learn and apply their knowledge
outside of the classroom. Georgia Tech has established itself as a leading institute in
technology and education. We strongly believe that in order to become the leading
university of the future, Georgia Tech will have to excel even more in academics and we
are confident that Georgia Tech can do that.
The research we have done indicates that incorporating active learning in the
classrooms will be beneficial for the GT students and also the faculty and
administrators. There is only one recommendation offered that sounds simple enough
to implement, however, it will take a team effort to complete. Though it will take some
time to implement, results will be seen within a short period of taking the active
learning approach.
To ensure the successful enhancements in education quality at GT, CEL Consulting
recommends the following:

1. Georgia Tech should take a step toward the active learning approach to continue
to excel in academics and academic quality.
a. The CETL Department at Tech is aware of the benefits of active learning
but more research must be conducted involving GT professors and their
reactions to active learning.
b. Research should be conducted with GT professors participating in a study
that will demonstrate the educational differences between passive and
active learning strategies.
c. The results of the research would be shared with CETL and other GT
professors as a motivation to adopt new teaching methods.

2. After a couple of years, Georgia Tech should determine the acceptance and
chances of the new method.
a. The CETL Department will analyze the results and find the best ways to
implement active learning at GT.
b. Provide an incentive system for professors to motivate them to try new
methods in the best ways that students can learn from.
c. Create seminars for professors to not only learn more about active
learning but also learn from their colleagues who are using the new
system.
3. If the academic changes prove successful, Georgia Tech should take the leap to a
new, modern, and cutting edge learning experience to make the classrooms more
interactive and increase student interaction.
