Introduce symbols by showing the PowerPoint that includes pictures of

different symbols.
Ask the students if they know what each picture/symbol means.
Where have you seen this symbol?
Discuss the definition of a symbol.
Ask the students if they can name symbols that they think represent the United
States. Make a list of all answers given.
Have the students self asses using their fingers they will hold up a number
from 1-4 on how familiar they are with the symbols of the United States.
Inform the students that the first symbol you are going to discuss is the

students, Learning/Reading disabilities
(SLD), etc.

American flag.
8. Have the students sit on the floor in the reading area to prepare for a story.
9. As a whole class start a KWL chart about the American flag. Only complete
the first two columns: What do you know? What would you like to know?
10. The teacher will read the book The American Flag by Patricia Ryon Quiri
aloud to the students.
11. Refer back to the KWL chart to start a classroom discussion. Read the first
question in the What would you like to know? column. Ask the students to
raise their hand if they know they answer now that the book has been read.
Write the students answer in the What I learned column. Continue to have the
students answer the questions from the What would you like to know? column
and record their answers in the What I learned column.
12. After all the questions have been answered ask the students if there is anything
else they would like to add to the What I learned column.
13. Review the KWL chart with the students by reading all the statements in the
What I know and What I learned columns.
14. While the students are still sitting on the floor discuss how the flag has its own
song and pledge. Does anyone know the flags pledge?
15. Does anyone know the flags song? While the students are still standing play
the video of the Star Spangled Banner with lyrics included.

16. The students will then be divided into two groups.
17. The first group will work on decorating their pre-made U.S. symbols portfolio
and they will also make a replica of the American flag using the pre-cut paper.
They will glue their flag on the back of their portfolio.
18. While the first group is working on their portfolio and flag the second group
will be completing a QR code activity.
19. Each student in group two will have a tablet that they will use to go around the
room and scan each QR code. Each code will bring up a short video about a
different U.S. symbol.
20. The students will have a data sheet in which they will be filling out at each
different QR code station. On the data sheet they will write the name of the
symbol as well as one interesting fact they learned about that symbol.
21. Once both groups have finished the students will switch and complete the
activity they have not already done.
22. When all students have finished both activities the teacher will have some of
the students share one of the symbols they found in the QR code activity as
well as the interesting fact that went along with it.
