Writing - Language Arts: Parts of Speech
The amazing world of nouns, verbs, and adjectives
Print: Workbook
Nonprint: Websites
With this, the students will meet the NE (Nebraska) Standards LA 1.2.1.h and LA 1.2.1.i.
With this lesson, the students will learn the writing tools and rules of grammar with the
guidance of an instructor. The instructor will help them learn the definitions of nouns,
verbs, and adjectives and give examples of each. The students will then be able to give
the definitions of each in their words, give their own examples and relate this information
to the writing process. Students will be able to successfully identify nouns, verbs, and
adjectives and will broaden their knowledge of the writing process
The students will gain a better understanding of nouns, verbs, and adjectives in order to
better their writing skills. By learning about nouns, verbs, and adjectives students will be
able to understand the basic rules of grammar and how to use them properly in the writing
process and their speaking skills. The students will get to put their skills into practice by
filling out the worksheet in their workbooks and when they are working on their writing
skills.
The students will need their workbooks to complete a worksheet after the instructors
presentation on nouns, verbs, and adjectives. The instructor will need a computer or a
laptop to create the Popplet as well as a projector and screen to present the Popplet.
Objective 1: Present the Popplet to the class allowing them to learn grammar using nouns,
verbs, and adjectives.
Objective 2: Students will learn the definitions of nouns, verbs, and adjectives and be able
to give examples of each.

Objective 3: Students will then successfully complete the worksheet in their workbooks
about nouns, verbs, and adjectives.
To prepare for this lesson, the students will have to listen to the instructor present the
Popplet in order to gain an understanding of nouns, verbs, and adjectives. It is the
instructors responsibility to prepare the students using the Popplet in order for them to
complete their worksheet.
The students will be learning through many of the stages of Blooms Taxonomy:
Apply: Students will apply their new knowledge of nouns, verbs, and adjectives in
order to fill out their worksheet in their workbooks. They will also apply this
knowledge to the writing process.
Understanding: Students must understand the definitions of nouns, verbs, and
adjectives in order to complete the assignment. They must also relate this
information when completing other assignments and when using the writing
process.
Remember: Students must define nouns, verbs, adjectives, and recall different
examples of each one. They must remember how to use these grammar rules when
using the writing process.
The students will learn by practicing these skills in different worksheets and when using
the writing process. They will broaden their knowledge of nouns, verbs, and adjectives

and how to apply them.

1.
Instructor will create a Popplet defining nouns, verbs, and adjectives prior to
class. The Popplet will provide examples and pictures of each part of speech.
2.
Instructor will present the Popplet and explain the definition of nouns, verbs, and
adjectives to the class.
3.
Students will listen to the instructor present the Popplet and learn the definitions
of nouns, verbs, and adjectives.
4.
Students will take notes in their workbooks and they will also ask any questions
they may have. Instructor will answer any questions the students may have.
5.
Instructor will conduct a class activity by interacting with the students and asking
them questions. Instructor will give examples of each part of speech and ask the
students to identify whether it classifies as a noun, verb, or an adjective.
6.
Students will fill out a worksheet in their workbooks classifying nouns, verbs, and
adjectives.
7.
Instructor will then assess the students knowledge and understanding of the parts
of speech.
There are many ways the instructor could measure the students success with this lesson.
The student will complete the worksheet in the workbook and the instructor could collect
this worksheet and grade their progress. The instructor could also have a quiz the next day
to see what the students remembered about nouns, verbs, and adjectives testing their
ability to define each part of speech as well as give examples of each. The instructor
could also conduct a class activity where he or she would state a word and the students
would have to write the correct part of speech on a whiteboard. Nouns, verbs, and
adjectives are obviously something the students will be using on a daily basis so these
parts of speech will keep coming up on future assignments. There would be plenty of
worksheets the students would be completing in the future that would touch on these
topics so the instructor could always grade their progress on those worksheets as well. As
previously stated, students will encounter nouns, verbs, and adjectives on a daily basis so
this lesson could be applied to many future lessons. The instructor could also add on to
the Popplet when the students start learning more complex parts of speech such as
pronouns and adverbs. There are many ways that the instructor could measure the
success of the Popplet lesson covering nouns, verbs, and adjectives and there are many
ways the instructor could add on to the lesson for future lesson plans.
