Causes that started happening years before the Civil War

Anything that isnt given to the government by the

constitution, according to the tenth amendment, is the

states choice to enforce.

The North taxed southern trade with tariffs, which hurt

their economy, but helped the economy of the north.
The south didnt want to pay these tariffs, and said it was
unconstitutional to impose them.

Also, the south owns a large amount of slaves. The north,

on the other hand, didnt like slavery at all, and many
wanted to end it. The territories that are trying to
become states dont know if their going to have slaves or
not. The north argued that no new state should have
slavery, whilst the south argued that new states should
choose to have slavery or not.

If it is remembered from a previous lesson, slavery wasnt

legal in colonial Georgia. From 1735 to 1750, the trustees
banned slavery because the slaves would run away to
Florida, where they could be free. In 1742, Oglethorpe
defeated the Spanish at the Battle of Bloody Marsh, and
Spain was no longer considered a threat. Slavery was made
legal in Georgia.

The 80% of the South's economy was agricultural.

Though only one third of southerners had slaves,
the South had almost as many slaves as they did
whites. The Souths economy was starting to
decline. Most of the people lived outside the cities,
so there wasnt as many train tracks.

In the North, people were much more likely to have a career in business,
medicine, or sciences than people in the South. 70 percent of the population
lived in the North. There was no slaves in the North, because they could afford
to go with only immigrant labor. They had most of the railroads, and most of
them lived in urban areas. The economy was going up when the Civil War
started.

These causes happened right before the Civil War

Abraham Lincoln was elected in 1860. He was the

Republican candidate, and he said that America

couldnt go on being half slave, and half free. This
made some southerners believe that he wanted to
totally abolish slavery in America. This made multiple
southern states secede from the Union.

In 1859, John Brown attacked Harpers Ferry, captured

important citizens, and stole weapons and ammunition. He

wanted to give the items to slaves and other folks, so that
they could have an uprising and claim their freedom. His
colleagues were killed and he was captured by Robert E.
Lee. He was sentenced to death.

Starting in 1860 and ending in 1861, eleven states

seceded from the Union, because of many of the

causes listed above. They felt that the only way for
them to have success was to separate from the Union
that would try to control them. This created the two
sides of the Civil War, the Union and the Confederacy.
