Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

How to use this booklet

You will need to complete every page of this booklet, and all sections / questions
required.
Assessment criteria for Distinction grade;
LO2
Plans will show a full consideration of movement and continuity, perspective, point of view,
transitions and special effects.
Precise and workable planning of timing and synchronization to a soundtrack will be
produced. It will be clear at this stage, from the documentation, what the finished piece will
look and sound like.
Learners will follow industry conventions and terminology used in storyboard production
correctly.
Plans for the construction of models, sets and props will be realistic and clear.
Drawings, script and storyboard will all show a creative interpretation of the idea.

LO3:
The documentation linked to the production will be full and detailed and there will be
evidence that the production management and scheduling of the project has been effective
and carried out in a professional manner. The techniques used in the production of the work
are likely to be related to an understanding of current trends in the industry.

Both LO2 and LO3

In all practical activity learners will be capable of working autonomously and effectively. They
will work on their own initiative, will not need constant support or supervision, will give the
work their full commitment, work positively and cooperatively with others, and meet
deadlines. In other words, they will have the kind of self-management skills that would be
expected of them in a professional context. Note also that this criterion should not be taken
to mean that learners do not seek advice or that they work without discussing things with
their tutor, but rather that they are not dependent upon the support of others and that when
they take advice they weigh it carefully for themselves.

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

Planning
Brainstorm / mind map (add extra pages if necessary)
The animation I will create will be a teaser for a full music video by the band Alestorm due to
it being only a teaser the video I am creating will be a minimum of 30 seconds long but will
likely not be much longer than this, for the video I will be using Lego models to create the
characters in the video and the props in the video as well as some of the sets.

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

Attach a 400 word treatment of your idea
The video I am creating is a short teaser for the band Alestorm it will only be around 30
seconds long but cannot be any shorter than this. The song I will use can be anything of my
choosing but has to be from the band specified so I chose the song Shipwrecked by them
the theme of the video will fit in with the genre of music the band plays known as pirate metal
so the video will thusly base around pirates and a story involving the story the song tries to
tell as well. The story will involve a group of pirates sailing to an island to find treasure whilst
encountering other pirates along the way. All of the models will be made from Lego because
it means I will have the flexibility to create the characters I want, also the set will be easy to
create will Lego rather than other materials which take more time.
There will be likely be around 20 or so characters in the video, it will not take much time to
create the characters as with the materials I am using they will be easy to customize and
create exactly the right character I need for the video. I have all of the figures for the video
and will only need to make sure they are suitable for the video and fit with the theme, for the
background I will likely use a green screen in the background of all the scenes so as to make
the illusion that they are in the location I want them to be for example when at sea with the
green screen I can create the image of the sea behind the characters so as to make it seem
like they are really at sea. For the characters it will be easy to make them look suitable for
the video as I already have all of the resources to create suitable models and scenery. For
the music I will need to make sure I have permission to use the music. For the story I will
have to make sure I have everything I need for every scene before moving on so as to make
sure that the story makes sense and flows together so that the plot is not confusing. Another
thing I will need to makes sure every scene does not have is continuity errors as an error in
a stop motion video is much more obvious than in a normal video and retaking the picture
would waste time.

How will you meet the requirements of your brief?

To meet the requirements set by the brief I will need to plan out every scene a while before
filming begins as due to this brief requiring so much work any mistakes have to be kept to a
minimum as this will save time later on during editing so that nothing will have to be reshot,
this will mean all storyboarding will have to be done thoroughly and must show exactly what
has to be in what scene to reduce as many errors as possible. Another way I will increase
the efficiency of the production is by making sure all of the characters and sets are ready
before every scene and have no continuity errors from scene to scene. By doing all of this I
can keep to a time schedule so as to make sure that the deadline is stuck too and met on
time.

Risk assessment: Are there any health and safety issues you may encounter?
Due to the work only requiring people to work with small models there are no real health and
safety risks.

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

Discuss any legal issues you may face. E.g.; sound, plagiarism, age restrictions
I doubt there will be any legal issues I will need to make sure I have all of the necessary
permissions to use the song Shipwrecked by Alestorm for the video and make sure nothing
in the video Is copied from other videos so as to make sure there are no plagiarism issues.

Use of possible formats

Circle which of the following formats your animation will take;
Stop-frame techniques
Time lapse photography
Plasticine animation
Claymation
Using found objects
Modelling
Puppetry
Combined formats

Why are you using that particular format?

I am using these formats because they are both suitable for the form of animation I am
making and will fit the theme of the video. Stop frame is also better because it looks better
than others with all of the frames added. Also using Lego allows more movement than other
models and can make better looking animations.

What are the different possibilities you could explore using this format?
Using this format I can create a more smooth looking animation with the models and make
the video have more realistic movements rather than spending all of the time creating clay
models and possibly making continuity errors. Another thing is with commonly found objects
it makes the production easier as you do not need to spend as much time creating the
models and making sure they fit the brief.

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

What are the limitations of using this format? (I.e. what problems/ obstacles might you
have?)
The main limitations of using these techniques is that sometimes using found objects can be
unrealistic and can limit the movements you can make the objects do for example with clay
any movement can be done within reason but with an object they can only so some
movements.

What imaginative or inventive animations have you seen which use this format?
Add in links and screen shots of three examples of animations using this format.

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

Movement of characters

How are you going to make your characters move?

By moving the parts of the characters that can move and making the movements look
natural.

What is the purpose of an armature?

The main purpose is to have a model that can move and be used to create a stop motion
animation to make the image of a character, usually the model will need articulation so as to
make sure that the armature can move in any way that is needed for the production.

Will you use them for your characters?

No

If so, how will you make it?

I will be using Lego models for my animation.

Lighting Design

Where will you be photographing your animation?

In the studio

Does it have natural daylight?

No

If so, you will need to block this out. Explain why.

So as to keep the lighting consistent between frames so it does not jump suddenly.

Do you have a constant light source(s) such as a lamp?

Yes studio lighting.

Where will you place your light source(s) to create interesting effects?
Above the set to make a sun effect and horizontal in the start to make the idea for morning.

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

Frame numbers
You will need to label your images as frames
The first 24 frames will be written as;
0_1

the following 24 will be

1_1

1_3
Ensure your clips are labeled as such. Screen shot the folder your clips are in, and copy the
image underneath.

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

Dope sheets
A dope sheet is an animation tool which helps a animator organise the animation shot-byshot.
This gives the camera operator instructions on each shot type and how many frames this will
be used for.
A dope sheet is usually split into 5 different sections.

To indicate what action occurs on which frame number

To see what action is happening in this shot.
To see what dialogue used in this scene.
To show what level of animation is happening.
To give camera instructions (angle).

For example;

Because you will be working with video, you will be using 30fps. You will need to complete a
dope sheet for EVERY SECOND of your animation.
i.e, if you make a 30 second animation, you will need to complete 30 dope sheets.
This will be a time-consuming task, but it will help you understand what will need to
happen in each of the shots you take. The higher marks will come from a detailed and
careful collection of dope sheets. For example, if your characters speaks, you will need to
show the mouth forming every shape in order to look effective.
