Social Studies 11 Course Outline

2014/2015

Course Overview
Social Studies 11 looks at Canadas continuous development as a nation within one of the most
difficult centuries of human history, the 20th Century. The course will look at Canadas roles in
the two world wars, as well as the Cold War and the development of Canada into a very
respected peacekeeping nation. The course will also look at the development of Canadas
government and its legal system. Finally, the course will look at Canadas geography and global
issues that the country continues to face to this day.
Social Studies 11 does have a provincial exam which is worth 20% of the final grade. Therefore
it is imperative that students complete all assignments and write all quizzes and tests in order
to be prepared for the provincial. As this course looks at both the history and geography of
Canada, there is a lot of material that needs to be covered during the year. It is very important
that all students stay caught up on the readings and the assignments.
Social Studies 11 is based on the curriculum designed by the Ministry of Education. The
Ministry divides the course into Prescribed Learning Outcomes (P.L.O.s) that they expect each
student to have mastery over by the end of the course. Reviewing these PLOs before the
provincial exam is a useful method of determining what you do and do not know from the
course. The PLOs are listed at the following website:

Absences
If a student misses a class they must see me immediately, do not wait until the next scheduled
class!! As there is a provincial exam for this course, all assignments must be completed in order
to effectively prepare you for the exam. Therefore there will be no omits on assignments.
If you know you are going to miss a class please see me ahead of time. If you miss a class you
are expected to complete all assignments by the next class. You may also e-mail me at
ryan.mansley@sd23.bc.ca to clarify any problems.

Classroom Expectations
The following is a list of my expectations of you as a student in my classroom. Being this is a
grade 11 class I will not continually remind you of the rules and expectations of the classroom.
1. Eating will be permitted in the classroom as long as the following takes place:
a. Garbage will not be left in the classroom. If I have to pick up garbage after every
class, eating will no longer be permitted.
b. Eating does not become a distraction to the learning environment.
c. Pop and highly caffeinated energy drinks will not be permitted. Water, or uncarbonated drinks are acceptable.
d. No actual meals (i.e. soups, salads, etc.). Snack type foods are fine (i.e. granola
bars, power bars, etc.)
2. I-pods and MP3 players will be allowed in the classroom. However, they may not be
used when I am talking, or a discussion is occurring, or when writing quizzes or tests.
Use of these devices during any of the above instances will result in confiscation of the
device for the remainder of the day as well as losing the privilege to use the device at all
in the future.
3. Cell phones may not be used during class time. If found using a cell phone, it will be
confiscated for the rest of the day.
4. KSS rules will be upheld in the classroom (i.e. no hats, and proper dress code).
5. There will be a seating plan for the first month. If things go well after the first month,
then the seating plan may be changed or gotten rid of altogether.
6. It is expected that you will come to class prepared every day. This means that you have
completed the required reading and assignments, as well as bringing the appropriate
materials to each and every class (textbooks, binder, handouts, pencil, pen).
7. Paper waste is to be put into the paper-recycling bin.
8. Any language that is deemed to be racist, sexist, or inappropriate will not be acceptable
and will be dealt with immediately.
9. Do not bring homework from other classes.
10. Copying is cheating. Both the person who copied and the person who allowed their
work to be copied will receive zeros for the assignment.
If you are having any problems or are concerned about anything, please see me immediately,
dont wait for a small problem to grow into a larger one.
