Grade Level/Class Description

Students will achieve one years growth in the areas of Library Media. This will include information problem solving
skills using the Big 6 model of research. Students will develop an awareness of and interaction with literature in a
variety of formats for the purpose of personal enrichment and information. Students will be aware that media literacy
as a life skill is integral to modern citizenship, informed decision making, and healthy lifestyles.
Grade Level Goals and Objectives
Franklin Elementary follows the Utah State Core Curriculum. Utah has developed a Core Curriculum which outlines
standards of learning that are essential for all students at each elementary grade level. The curriculum includes ideas,
concepts, and skills to provide a foundation for which subsequent learning may be built. The curriculum for each grade
level can be accessed on the Utah State Office of Educations website at:
http://www.uen.org/core/librarymedia/index.shtml.
Instructional Materials
Instructional materials and skills lessons are derived from the state library media core curriculum and published district
unit lesson plans supplemented with hands-on activities, games, and skill applications.
Instructional Practices
Students will visit the library once each week with their homeroom class. Kindergarten classes will have 30 min. skill
classes. 1st through 6th grade classes will have 45 min. library skills classes. Time will be provided to check books in and
out. Students should return library books each week during their library time. They may renew books if they are not
done reading their books unless other students are waiting to read that book. Students in Grades K and 1 will check out
only one book at a time and will keep it in their classroom. Students in Grades 2 through 6 may check out up to 2 books
and take them home if their teacher allows them to do so and as long as they consistently return them on time. The
library will also be open for 25 min. after school for students to exchange their library books.

The Salt Lake City School District does not discriminate on the basis of age,
color, disability, national origin, pregnancy, race, religion or sex.

Course Requirements
In both classrooms and common areas (library, hall, lunchroom, playground, bathrooms, etc.) students are required to
meet school wide behavior expectations which are as follows:
Be Respectful Respect self and others by keeping hands, feet and objects to self.
Walk and talk quietly.
Follow directions the first time given.
Be Responsible Be on time and prepared to learn each day.
Use school materials and equipment appropriately.
Be Remarkable Treat others the way you want to be treated.

Grading Procedures

When grades are given on a project they will be based on a predetermined rubric. Missed work is the
responsibility of the student. It is extremely hard to make up missed assignments due to the time constraints
in the library schedule, however if the student will make the effort to see the teacher, every opportunity
possible will be provided for them to make up the missing work if due to an illness.
Tentative Class and Activity Schedule
Schedules are individualized by homerooms. For information on your students library day, please check with their
homeroom teacher.
