Sound Play
Suggested Uses
This game reviews short a (cvc) words and all consonant sounds, except q and k.
Each card will ask the reader to blend the first word, and segment the next word.
This set can be used as a daily, whole-class warm-up to your reading time, a ticket
out the door, or as an intervention activity with a small group (each student would receive
more than one card in this instance = more practice!).

Optional, but recommended: First, teach students the difference between stop sounds (i.e. t, p, d)
and continuous sounds (i.e. s, m, and all vowel sounds). Vowel sound posters, and a sorting activity
for stop and continuous sounds, are included in the complete vowel game set (for purchase).
I prefer having students sit in a circle for the I Have, Who Has game. Many sounds in our alphabet
sound very similar. I encourage students to watch the reader's mouth when they segment the word, to
help distinguish between sounds. Model for students how to project their voice and enunciate each
sound.
Use the Teacher's Guide card to make sure your class does not accidentally skip a word. It has all of
the game words written in order. There is nothing worse than getting to the end of the game and
finding out 4 of your students didn't get a chance to read their card.
The I have word should be blended. The Who has word should be segmented.
Direct students to hold all continuous sounds for about 2 seconds when segmenting. I find it helps
students when blending words back together.
Be patient and persistent. The first time I did an I Have, Who Has game with my students, I swore I
would never do it again. The kids took too long. They didn't listen to the reader carefully. They
weren't paying attention! However, we trudged on, and much to my delight, the second time around
was so much better. It was actually fun and exciting for all of us! We are old pros by the end of the
year. It just takes patience and practice, like everything else in the classroom.
