Tiger Pride
DT: Systematic Observation
This weeks lesson in Tiger Pride was different because it was cumulative since it was
the last week of teaching for me. The students were supposed to show competency cognitively
and through their skills that they remember and are skillful in what they have learned. The two
lessons that I came up with were on underhand throwing and catching, and the other one was a
mix of underhand throwing and catching, chase flee dodge, basketball dribbling and soccer
dribbling. I had about 28 students on Monday but since we combined lessons we had around 45
students that day. The skills previously learned to this lesson were skills on line dancing. This
cumulative lesson was performed on the blacktop. The equipment used in these lessons were
yarn balls, basketballs, soccer balls, hula hoops and cones.
The student learning outcomes for this lesson consisted of the psychomotor objective
which is that SWBAT dribble a basketball and soccer ball to the given task. SWBAT execute proper
cues and techniques for underhand throwing and catching, and chasing fleeing and dodging. For
cognitive development the objective was that SWBAT discuss strategies necessary to complete
designated task(s). SWBAT explain the cues of the skill for each discipline/skill. The affective
objective is that SWBAT support their teammates and encourage one another throughout the activity
stations. They will high five one another when completing tasks and help one another remember
COTS. Finally the health related fitness objective is that students will go through an instant activity
to warm up their muscles and increase their heart rate. I believe that on Monday none of my
objectives were reached because my students were misbehaving and did not get through any part of
my lesson aside from my instant activity. On Wednesday I feel that the students reached all of the

objectives because the students adequately performed all of the skills in the circuit and it was a very
productive lesson. Another reason that I feel that it was a great lesson was because the data showed
that the students were in activity for about 12 minutes and that is pretty decent in a 30 minute lesson
with circuits. If I were to change this teaching episode I would definitely change the one of the
circuits out with chasing fleeing and dodging because it wasnt as effective as I thought it was going
to be. I would also try to keep management down by trying to transition more quickly in the lesson.
I felt that I reached none of the 4 criteria of a learning experience on Monday but I feel that
on Wednesday I had reached 3 or 4 of these criteria in my lesson. I gave the students maximum
opportunities to practice each skill at their stations and I needed to even extend some of the lesson for
some students because they were really effective when practicing some skills. I think there could
have been more time to practice their skill sets if the transitions were better and if the grouping at the
beginning of the lesson went by more quickly, and because this happened I had 12 minutes of
activity, 15 minutes of management, and 3 minutes of instruction. All of my students had the
opportunity to participate in this cumulative lesson, but some of my students decided to mess around
and ended up sitting down during my lesson. I tried to have more energy in this lesson because it
makes a difference when teaching students so that they are more willing to participate and I made
sure that I participated with them. I also made sure that the students were progressing in each
activity by extending the lesson, especially in the basketball circuit by adding on different skills in
the relay. I think I could improve on how to manage a few different stations in a lesson, and how I
could use my time wisely at each station. I had students improve their skills in the lessons by
extending the tasks, and even using myself in sharks and minnows to make the sharks have more of a
challenge or if the minnows kept escaping the sharks.
During the teaching episode on Monday I did not move around very much or effectively
because most of the time I was dealing with behavioural issue, but on Wednesday I made sure that I
went to each station and participated in each lesson to help motivate my students. I did not have the

cues repeated like I did in previous lesson because it was cumulative, but I realized that I should have
done the same cues that I did in the beginning of the year when I first taught the lessons to make sure
there was consistency. The movements and instructions of each station were reinforced by me when
I went to each station to ensure that the students were performing the skills correctly. I think the
instructions were pretty straight forward in my lesson but I think they could have been shortened on
sharks and minnows to increase the time spent in activity. There was some feedback specific to the
skills being performed but most of it was more general because I felt like I had to keep moving
through each circuit to give more feedback and did not want to stay with a particular station or
student for too long. I did demonstrations for all of my stations at the beginning of the lesson and
every time the skill had changed and all of the students were able to reproduce the skills that they had
learned as long as they were cooperating and listening to my instructions. The equipment that was
used in the lesson did not really affect the learning environment but it was more the students who
were misbehaving. I think this lesson went really well because the students liked changing tasks and
had fun at each station. They also only had 5 minutes at each station so they kept moving quickly
across all the stations. I think I did well balancing my time at each station, giving clear instructions,
and extending tasks when needed. I would like to work on incorporating a set induction specifically
when doing a cumulative lesson and when doing different stations in a given lesson, make quicker
transitions and being enthusiastic at all stations.
Some strategies I would like to improve in the weakness in my pedagogical skill set would be
to improve the way I deal with misbehavior and keeping my cool and making sure to control
situations even when they get out of hand especially when having a great number of students. Once
again I think if I had a better grouping strategy for my students they would be more effective
throughout the lesson and could get into activity more quickly. There are no more weeks in Tiger
Pride besides post testing for the students and the Festival day which I am excited about and hope the
students enjoy!
