in a variety of online and offline environments. In the past year, libraries across
Queensland have climbed aboard the Minecraft train. At Sunshine Coast Libraries
(SCL), a two-week SCL Minecraft build saw 63 registered users between the ages of
12 and 24 participate online to build SCL branches. Following on from this, clients
were tasked with building 3D Minecraft papertoysandcreeper heads out of
photography boxes these activities ran through the July and September school holidays.
In Hughenden, children had fun making Minecraft cut out figures using simple craft materials over the
September holidays, and at State Library, Minecraft server, programming and game development
workshops have been held in both the winter and spring Story Lab programs. These workshops look at
Minecraft as a platform to learn computer programming and coding in a fun and supportive environment. Let
us know if you have been using Minecraft in your library.

Changes to SLQ services during G20

Friday 14 November is a public holiday in Brisbane and SLQ South Bank and SLQ
Cannon Hill will both be closed. SLQ South Bank will also be closed on Saturday 15
and Sunday 16 November. In the week leading up to G20 (1013 November), SLQ
South Bank will operate reduced hours (10am5pm daily). Most staff will be working
offsite that week so email is the best way to communicate. SLQ Cannon Hill will be
open normal hours.

requests will be processed before 17 November. Please note, individual clients will not be able to request
via One Search during this period. There will be no access to the public libraries directory from Friday 14 to

Local hero provides unique learning opportunity

Two CityLibraries staff were privileged to be involved in making a short documentary
that was broadcast on ABC 2 in early October. The documentary centred around
Townsville soldier Sergeant McQuilty Coco Quirke NSC, who was injured on
deployment in Afghanistan in 2011. Coco talks about his recovery from the horrific
injuries, dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder and the Soldier Recovery Centre in
which he plays a vital and inspirational role. Working alongside Townsville ABC Open
producer Michael Bromage, staff has been given the opportunity to develop their creative writing,
photography, film making and interviewing skills. Equipped with the new set of skills, staff hope to create
bigger and better films, photos and creative content that will be useful in promoting local stories, the
wonderful services and events provided by CityLibraries, and train colleagues and members of the public.

Around the world

Public helps expand library collections
New York Public Library Labs (NYPL Labs) are doing much more than putting objects
from their collections online; they are involving the public in making valuable new
knowledge. Starting with the original "What's on the Menu?" project, NYPL Labs has
produced a run of clever, original projects that share items from their collections and
engage the public in creating new digital resources that both enrich those collections
and make them part of new networks of information online. Projects like Ensemble (for
transcribing theatre programs) and Building Inspector (for turning historic maps into digital atlases) are great
examples of the innovative work that libraries can do.
