The court martial of Rizal started in the military building
called Cuartel de Espana , where he was accused of
three crimes (1)rebellion ,(2) sedition and (3) illegal
Gov. General Polavieja signed the decision of the court
martial and ordered Rizal to be shot 7:00 o clock in the
morning of December 30, 1896 at Bagumbayan.
Before he died he wrote an untitled poem which was
given the title ultimo Adios by the Rizalistas.

Chapter 23

After 4 years of exile in Dapitan , Rizal decided to return

to Europe
While waiting for the next steamer heading to Spain he
stayed in the cruiser Castilla. The Katipunan plot to
overthrow Spanish rule was discovered by Fray Mariano
Gil, an agustinian cura of Tondo

Boarding the steamer Isla de Panay, Rizal continued his

journey to Spain.

Unknown to Rizal, Gov. Gen. Blanco was secretly

conspiring with the Ministers of War and the Colonies for
his downfall. A few hours before reaching Barcelona he
was held prisoner in his cabin.

Rizal was imprisoned at Monich then brought to the

headquarters of Gov. Gen. Despujol where it was decided
to ship him back to Manila on the transport ship Colon
