The Setting Recorder:

Book Corner Club Meeting Date:
Title of Reader:

You are The Setting Recorder. You have to look at where the story is set geographically and when it is
set historically. You have three jobs:
1 While you are reading, find references plants, animals, customs, places etc. that are typical of
the geographical setting chosen by the writer, but not of your town or country. Find out about
them (internet, encyclopaedias, etc) and prepare to tell the other members of your Club.
2 While you are reading, find references clothes, social habits, vehicles, etc. that are typical of the
historical period the story is set in but not of modern times. Find out about them and prepare to tell
the other members of your Club.
3 While you are reading, find geographical and historical references to things that remind you of
your own town or country and time. Note them down and discuss them with your Club members.
Try to add a personal element or question for your fellow Club members at the meeting, e.g. there
are a lot of large, empty houses in my city, like the one in Great Expectations the gardens are
also similar to jungles. Reading this book makes me wonder who lives or lived in themwhat do
you think?
