Narrative Theory

EQUILIBRIUM

The film is set in a futuristic, dystopian Chicago, in which the main

character (Beatrice) lives with her parents and brother.
Society is divided into five factions, Beatrice has grown up in Abnegation
along with her family, with her father being the head of the council.
This reflects everything as being normal and her family are happily living
together in their faction.

DISRUPTION

The disruption occurs when both Beatrice and her brother (Caleb) decide
to move factions at the choosing ceremony.
Tris becomes a member of the Dauntless faction (the faction of bravery)
and is put to the test in physical and mental stages of initiation. Due to
this, Tris almost fails out of Dauntless.
A leader at Dauntless named Four discovers that Tris is a Divergent, who
are seen as threats to society.

BATTLE FOR RESOLUTION

Later, it is discovered that members of the Erudite faction created a serum

which can control the mind. This serum is injected into Dauntless initiates
unknowingly, but doesn'tt work on Divergents.
Four and Tris battle in order to prevent the Dauntless from killing
innocent members of the Abnegation faction and stop the mind control
machines.

NEW EQUILIBRIUM

Tris and Four release everyone from the mind-control programme and
escape without being captured by Erudite staff.
They save Caleb, Fours father and a Dauntless initiate (Peter) and ride the
train to the end of the tracks- starting their life over in a new place.
