Relationships with siblings are an important aspect of family relationships across the
family life cycle.

Personal needs and characteristics can have a positive/negative impact on interpersonal

Sibling relationships last a lifetime and are vital to every aspect of health.

Students will discuss how birth order affects personality development.

Inquiry Questions:

What are some typical things brothers and sister have problems with or argue about?

How can sibling relationship be a positive part of a family?

How can ones birth order effect their psychological tendencies?

Butcher paper (or something for the students to draw on)
Sibling Rivalry PowerPoint
Smartboard

Anticipatory Set
Have students get into groups of the same birth order position. If some groups are too large
have them divide up into small groups. Give them the following instructions: Each member of
the group needs to think of an adjective that describes you as a person. You will then share
these will the rest of your group. If the majority of the group agrees that characteristic fits them
as well then you write it on your butcher paper. Continue to do this until you have a list of
characteristics that are common in your group. After your group is done present to the rest of
the class. What made you choose those characteristics?

Teaching presentation
1. Have students draw a picture of their family. After drawing the picture, have students list the qualities,
traits, etc. that they feel they have because of their place in the family. After group is done have them
share. (15 mins)
2. Sibling Rivalry PowerPoint (20 mins)
3. After the Sibling Rivalry PowerPoint is finished, have the student quietly think to themselves about
what the main topics of the PowerPoint were. Have the students pair up with a partner to discuss their
own thoughts and hear what their partners thoughts are. Have both students share their thoughts with
the class. (10 mins)

Closure
Think-pair-share on the main points from the Sibling Rivalry PowerPoint slide and how they are
similar in their own life.

Assessment

Students presentations to the rest of the class.
