Unit: Community Helpers

Goal(s):

Objective(s):
TLW define the term community.
TLW identify the roles of various types of community helper within a community
TLW categorize each role a role of selected community helpers by completing an
independent worksheet activity
TLW create a community helper poster to demonstrate the accomplishment of
understanding the term Community and what a community consist of.

TEKS: 113.11 (2) History. The student understands how historical figures, patriots, and
good citizens helped shape the community, state, and nation. The student is expected to:
(A) identify contributions of historical figures, including Sam Houston, George
Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Martin Luther King Jr., who have influenced the
community, state, and nation;
(B) identify historical figures such as Alexander Graham Bell, Thomas Edison, Garrett
Morgan, and Richard Allen, and other individuals who have exhibited individualism and
inventiveness; and
(C) compare the similarities and differences among the lives and activities of historical
figures and other individuals who have influenced the community, state, and nation.

Materials/Resources/Technology needs: Prezi presentions slide, Community Helper


hand outs, Pencils, Scissors, and Glue.

Instructional Procedures:
Teacher will first introduce the word community.

Teacher will activate learners prior knowledge on the word by doing a brief
graphic organizer on community.
Teacher will allow student to share responses and writes them on chart paper.
Student will discuss responses in open discussion with teacher
Teacher will invite students to view a Prezi presentation slide with Video to
expand on students knowledge and understand how many individuals make up a
community, how various roles or leader help our community.

Focusing Event:
Teacher will arouse scholar interest starting off with riddle to arouse learners interest
Teaching/ Learning Procedures:
Teacher will discuss video/presentation slide with students and ask questions
Teacher ask probing questions to ask higher order questions about the meaning of
being helpful.(ei,.How is being helpful? What is a leader? What would make
us good leaders or good helper either in school or in our community)
Teacher will provide students with an independent handout worksheet activity.
Students will cut and paste matching role to the appropriate community help and
also complete a fill in the blank community help work sheet.
Formative Check (ongoing or specific): Check to see if students have a clear
understanding of if there is a need for more clarity

Closure: Why is it important for us to have community helpers? Can anyone tell me
what you have learned today about being helpful or being helpful to your community?

Assessment/Summative Evaluation:
The teacher will do an informal assessment to determine what the children comprehended
by asking children questions. Using personal communication and vocabulary words the
teacher talked to the children to see what they know. The teacher will do a walk through
to observe children while working individually. Teacher will check to make sure
materials and supplies are being handled properly.

Modifications/Notes:
Teacher will allow students to pair up with a partner if he or she is struggling with the
concept. Teacher will also provide more hands on instruction and allow time for student
to work a slower pace.
