Nature Study:
Plant Discovery:
Students will follow a trail prepared by the forest service and identify and discuss the differences,
similarities and interdependence of the plants in the surrounding ecosystem .

Insect Hunt:
Students will discuss what kinds of insects / insect-like animals might be found in this area using bug
capturing materials ( nets, twigs and baby food jars ) the students will collect an animal to observe and discuss
their similarities, differences, specializations and adaptations.

Bird Study:
During a bird observation walk, the students will identify different characteristics and adaptations
useful in identifying local birds. Students will dissect owl pellets to discover skeletal parts of owl prey.

Animal Tracking:
During an animal track hunt students will try to identify animals using an animal track identification
booklet. They will discuss how they were able to identify their animal and how they fit into the ecosystem.

Predator / Prey:
Students will participate in a game that will demonstrate how predators and prey survive and adapt in
an ecosystem.

Miwok Village:

Students will participate in a walk to a Miwok village site and discuss and participate in activities the
Miwoks did: ( i.e. Native American games, acorn grinding, food storage dwellings building) .

Gold Panning:
Students will participate in a gold panning experience. They will learn proper gold panning techniques
and how to identify iron pyrites and real gold.

Night Hike:
Students will identify and / or give examples of constellations, nocturnal animals and participate in an
Indian folk tale.
