ECED 429
TWS 4 Assessment Plan
Lesson Four
Social Studies (Veterans Day)
A.
Lesson Objective
With support and
discussion, students will
be able to verbally identify
the reasons why we
celebrate Veterans Day.

Assessments
Pre I will guide a
discussion about what a
veteran is and why we
celebrate it. If the students
are answering the
questions correctly, I will
ask more in depth
questions such as what
branches of military are
there.
During We will be filling
in a chart of facts about
veterans after we read
about them. I will be
asking students to tell me
what they know about
veterans based on the
books we read and what
we have talked about
already.
Post We will be filling
out another chart as a
class, but this time I will
ask the students to
answers without my
guidance. One student will
give their answer and
then I will ask by thumbs
up or thumbs down if
everyone agrees.

Accommodations
For my early finishers, I
have four worksheets that
have cartoon veterans on
them. The students will
color them based on how
they are dressed and
served (nurse, army, air
force, etc.). For low-level
and resource students I
will constantly call on
them to answer my
questions so that they are
communicating the
concept themselves. I will
provide an enlarged chart
for my visual learners so
that they can see the facts
that we are discussing. For
my auditory learners, we
will be discussing the
holiday as a class and I
will be reading two books
that are related to
Veterans Day. If I see that
students are getting
restless than I will have a
short break so that they
can get some of their
energy out before
continuing with the
lesson.

B. Pre-Assessment The students will be sitting on the carpet during the preassessment. I will introduce the lesson by asking them what we have been
talking about so much the past few days and what today is. After they answer
that today is Veterans Day, I will ask if they know exactly what a veteran is
and why we celebrate them. I will call on two students to answer these

questions. If the students answer correctly and the class agrees I will ask
more in-depth questions, such as what are the branches of military. I will
allow students to answer and then go over them.
Post-Assessment I will introduce the last poster and explain to the students
that I will be reading the paragraph on the poster and then they will be
answering these questions based on what I read. I will read the paragraph
and then I will read question one. I will choose one student to come up and
point to the answer in the paragraph and then I will have the class show if
they agree or disagree by thumbs up or down. I will repeat this process with
all of the questions. I will be looking at each student to see if they are
participating and meeting the objective. I will have a checklist to check off the
students that can answer my questions.
C. During-Assessment After I read the first book, Veterans Day by Robin
Nelson, I will ask students to talk to their neighbor about two things they
remember about the book and about veterans. After one minute, I will call
the students back to my attention and then call students to tell me one thing
they remember. After I write down the fact that they said in one of the circles
I will talk about that fact in more detail. I will be asking if students agree with
the fact that their classmate told us to see if students are progressing and
participating.
