Materials:

Lesson Details: This Lesson Number and Number Sequence, and Simple addition
and subtraction problems will allow students to understand what numbers 1-20
look like and how to count them in the correct order. Once the students achieve
counting from 1-20, teach them simple addition and subtraction. This can be taught
to students with M&M. The teacher can begin the addition and subtraction lesson
by giving each student 10 M&M, make sure to tell students not to eat the M&M until
the end of the lesson. Students will work in groups to practice problems once
teacher goes over the simple steps to addition and subtraction. When students are
complete the teacher will check to make sure that their answers are correct if
answers are correct allow students to eat M&M. For the students who get the
answers wrong work with the students one on one through those problems, then
allow those students to eat their M&M as well. Make sure before allowing the
students to eat M&M that none of them have allergies. This lesson will end with
students eating their M&M and the teacher going over what they learned and
answering any questions that they may have.

Procedure:
1. (CC.2.1.K.A.1) Number Names and Number Sequence
a. Begin class with counting from 1-20 using the Smartboard.
T: Slowly count 1-20 while flipping through the number cards on
the Smartboard.
S: Next students will follow along counting 1-20 with the teachers.
T: Take turn calling on students. Just going down the line can do
this, the first student will say one and then the second student will
say two and so on. Do this a few times so that it can sink into the
students heads.
b. (1.1.K.B) Make sure to show word recognition with the
numbers.
Have the students parents go over the number names with the
student at home the night before. This can be done with
flashcards or with the app Big Number Flashcards for the iPad, this
is a free download in the app store.
T: Explain to students that you want them to practice their
number recognition at home with their parents. This can be done
with the flashcards that will be made in class today.
1. Give the students supplies to make their flashcards. The
supplies will consist of Post-It Notes, and markers.

2. Sit students in groups and explain the directions to them
and how you want the project to be done.
S: Will make flash cards 1-20 with Post-It Notes and markers.
c. (CC.3.1.K.A.1) With a student teacher in the classroom, have
student teacher take students back one at a time to quiz them to
see where they are at on naming the numbers and counting the
numbers in order. The goal is to have each student count from 120.
T: Call students back one at a time, have students count from 1-20
and record their score.
S: Will begin quiz and count from 1-20 to the best of their ability.
i. T: Make sure to record each students progress, test this
about once a week to monitor students growth, let the
students know that they are doing a good job no matter
what. For the students who are struggling send home a
letter to the parents letting them know that they need to
work on their numbers a little bit more.
ii. T: Assing student their homework which would be
practicing their numbers 1-20
S: Practice their numbers by the using the deck of flash
cards that they made in class with the Post-It Notes or
allow them to an iPad from the classroom library to take

home and use the app Big Numbered Flash Cards for
practice.
iii. T: If a students was able to count from 1-20 without an
issue. Give them another goal to work on this goal could be
1-30. Or whatever I feel fits the students capability.
S: Count from 1-20 successfully give them a higher goal to
reach for the next test.
T: Help student make flashcards for higher numbers add
numbers on in increments of 10.
S: Take home index cards and practice for the next quiz.
2. Practice writing numbers 1-20
a. (2.1.K.A)
While other students are being quizzed by the student teacher on
counting from 1-20. Have stations where the other students can go
to change stations about every 10 minutes.
i. Station 1:
S: Have paper laid out so that students can trace over the
numbers.
ii. Station 2:
S: Use the Smart board, at the smart board station students
can drag numbers into the right sequence. Have numbers 120 in a jumble on the board. Have the program tell the
students weather they are in the right order or not. If the

student is not in the right order the program will light up
the numbers that are wrong.
iii. Station 3:
S: Have an iPad station set up and have the math file
opened so that students can play with the apps and
practice. Some of the apps that are offered that students
can play are Big Numbered Flashcards and Doodle numbers
this app allows students to practice drawing numbers.
Make sure to monitor students usage at this station to
make sure that students are using the appropriate apps.
3. (2.1.K.F) Using objects to complete simple addition and subtraction
problems
a. To complete these next steps students most be able to recognize
numbers 1-20.
T: When student achieve counting from 1-20, have them move on
to the next step.
b. For addition and subtraction problems only use numbers 1-10.
c. To complete this task students parents are also going to have to
step up. Send home letter to allow parents to know what is going
on and that we are going to need their help by practicing simple
addition and subtraction problems with their children.
