with at least 50% participation from the class. (Blooms Taxonomy: Knowledge)
Given a picture of a compass, students will indicate cardinal directions to the teacher with 100%
accuracy. (Blooms Taxonomy: Comprehension)
Given a starting point on the map, students must successfully navigate through the map following the
teachers instructions and at least 80% of class must end up in the final destination the teacher intended.
(Blooms Taxonomy: Application)
Given the Google Maps application, students will point out bodies of water every time one is shown,
and give their best possible guesses to what kind of body of water it is.
STUDENT PARTICIPATION:

The goal of this lesson is to teach students basic map reading including the use of the compass, symbols, and
references to land, water, cities and roads so that they will have a clear understanding of the importance of maps,
and its relation to Tennessee and the whole world.

Key Concepts:
Cardinal Directions and its use
Symbols recognition
Locate water and land in a map
Locate cities in a map
Find road names
National and global perspective maps
Vocabulary:
Academic Language is not addressed in IDT 3600. However, these could be examples/

Corner (in relation to streets)
Spatial directions- examples: across, near, etc.
This lesson will connect to other Geography lessons that will require the student looking at maps and
distinguishing what the symbols mean when they look at other states and countries.
This lesson is part of the Geography lessons for 1st Graders in Social Studies.
We will use this activity as a guideline for future activities involving reading maps.
Differentiated Activities will need to be planned especially when students already know the material, and for
those who have not mastered the material. Modifications are not addressed.

PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:

Introduction:
Begin by displaying a map.
Ask the students what do they see, and what do they think the symbols mean.
Ask students when they had to use a map, or when their families used a map.
Briefly explain what activities they will be doing: map symbols, cardinal directions, community map
navigation and also exploring the world activity.

Procedures:
For all activities:
If there are not enough computers, it is fine. The students will only be navigating through one website that
requires minimal work. They will be primarily looking at pictures in the web to complete their activities. Students
may take turns using the mouse.
