I will go over important vocabulary: headline, byline,
lead/nut graph, and quote.

Students will be divided into two groups of four and one
group of three

Guiding the Practice
Students will fill in the provided pyramid. The left will be
for traditional essays the right will be for news stories.
Providing the Independent Practice
In groups, students will need to read the provided article
for their group. They will need to identify the headline,
byline, lead/nut graph, and a quote. On a worksheet
they will need to indicate how the article follows the
inverted pyramid structure.
Adaptations/Accommodations for Students with Special Needs
ELL, Enriched Reader, Below average reader
Use a graphic organizer (the pyramid)
Enriched student will be given a different article to read
through and label. I will expect this student to use nut
graph instead of lead. The article is from the NY Times:

I will ask the BAR to restate the directions to me within
the smaller group.
To help the BAR and ELL student, I will provide them with
a labeled news story identifying where the headline,
byline, lead typically are, and what a quote looks like in
a story. I will use a current story. Each student will
