Title
Speakers Name: Nick Beck
Central Idea (Main Goal): To explain how to play chess

INTRODUCTION
Attention Grabber: Did you know that chess is actually considered a sport by the International
Olympic Committee?
In this speech, I will tell you all you need to know about the great game of chess. I will explain
the materials and setup, how to play, and some tips, strategies, and scenarios.
Lets begin with the materials and setup.
Materials and Setup
The materials are a board that is 8 squares by 8 white and black squares, standard pieces, an
opponent, and YOU
There are 6 different kinds of pieces called pawns, knights, bishops, rooks, queens, and kings.
The pawns are the most basic piece. They are a small cylinder with a sphere at the top.
The knights look like a horse head.
The bishops are like large pawns with a slit in the sphere.
The rooks look like a castle.
The queens are like large, ornate pawns.
The kings are large with a cross on top. Kings are the most important piece.
To begin setup, one player chooses white and one chooses black. This will be the color of the
pieces.

The rooks go on the corners with black on one side and white on the other.
The knights go next to the rooks.
The bishops go next to the knights.
There should be two spaces in the middle.
The queen and king go here, with the queen on the same color she is.
The pawns go in a row in front of the other pieces.

I bet you are now wondering, Well, Nick, thats great, but can we please learn how to actually
play. However, that is exactly what I am going to explain now.

How to play
Starting with white, each player can move one piece per turn. The goal is to put the
opponents king in checkmate. But, what does this mean? All of the pieces move in different
ways. Just to clear it up, pieces cannot jump over other pieces. Even so, if you land on an
opponents piece, you capture it.
To do some capturing, you must know how the pieces move.
The pawns move 1 space forward, but 2 spaces on their first move. However, they
capture diagonally. Also, if you get a pawn to the last row on your opponents side, you
can promote it to whatever piece you want.
The knights are the only piece that can jump over another piece. They move in an L
shape, 2 in one direction and 1 in another.
The bishops move diagonally as many possible spaces as you want.
The rooks move in forward, backwards, or to the side as many possible spaces as you
want.
The queens can move as many possible spaces as you want in any direction, but not in an
L shape. They are like a combination of the bishops and rooks.
The kings move 1 space in any direction. If the king is about to be taken, it is called
check. The king must move out of check on his next move.
To win, you must put the opponents king in checkmate. This means that the opponents king is
in check, but cannot move out of it.
Next, I will inform you about some special rules and strategies in chess.
Special rules and strategies
One special rule is castling. If it is the kings first move and there are no spaces between
him and the rook, he may move 2 spaces toward the rook and the rook may move out 3 spaces.
Another special rule is en passant. If a pawn moves 2 spaces and there is an opposing pawn next
to it after it moves, the opposing pawn captures it.
I will now explain some chess strategies. A fork is an example of a chess strategy. A fork
is when 2 or more of an opponents pieces are under attack by one of your pieces. Another chess
strategy is a pin. A pin is one of your opponents pieces are under attack by one of your pieces,
but if your opponents piece moves out of the way, they will expose another piece.
In conclusion, chess is an amazing game that is very popular throughout the world. I have
informed you the materials and setup, how to play, and some special rules and strategies.
CONCLUSION
Clincher: Now you know all the things needed to become a chess grandmaster.
