Professional Development Plan

Step I: Self-reflection
Document uploaded: philosophy of education.docx

Step II A. Description of School and Teaching,

Administrative, or Pupil Services Situation
Description of Position
I am currently teaching kindergarten at Neal Wilkins Early Learning Center.
Number of Years in Position
1 year
School Location/Setting
The Platteville School District is a rural school district located in southwestern Wisconsin. The
district consists on an early learning center, an elementary school, one middle school, and one
high school.

Demographics
Neal Wilkins Early Learning Center serves about 300 students in grades Pre-K through first
grade. 93 percent of the students are white, 2 percent Hispanic, 2 percent African American, 1
percent Asian, and 1 percent of the students are of a different race.
District Goals
The following are the goals and objectives of the Platteville School District:

To achieve the highest possible levels of intellectual, social, emotional, physical and
moral growth.
To incorporate a balanced curriculum based on student developmental needs.
To provide a supportive and positive learning environment.
To meeting the individual needs of our students by empowering them to be respectful,
responsible, and productive lifelong learners.

Step II B. Description of Goal to be Addressed

Goal: I will create guided reading groups based on the reading skills that students need so that
the developmental needs of each student will be met.

Step II C. Rationale for the Goal: Links to Professional

Situation and Wisconsin Educator Standards
Goal: I will create guided reading groups based on the reading skills that students need so that
the developmental needs of each student will be met.
Rationale for your Goal:
Goal: I will create guided reading groups based on the reading skills that students need so that
the developmental needs of each student will be met.
Rationale for the Goal and Link to Educational Situation:
The Platteville School District has strived to meet the developmental needs of each student. As a
Kindergarten teacher, I have implemented guided reading groups in my classroom. I based the
groups on reading skills so that I am teaching a specific reading skill instead of teaching to a
specific reading level.

I feel that forming guided reading groups based on reading skills that need to be addressed will
help student increase their reading skills, and will help determine if students need individual
help. For example, if a group of students have trouble with fluency, I will put those students in a
guided reading group together. During their assigned guided reading time, I will select books that
will help student increase their fluency. As the needs of students change, their groups will be
rearranged so that the skills that they need are still being addressed.
Licensure standard(s) addressed in your plan:

Teacher:(1) The teacher understands the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures
of the disciplines he or she teaches and can create learning experiences that make these
aspects of subject matter meaningful for pupils.
Teacher:(2) The teacher understands how children with broad ranges of ability learn and
provides instruction that supports their intellectual, social and personal development.
Teacher:(3) The teacher understands how pupils differ in their approaches to learning
and the barriers that impede learning and can adapt instruction to meet the diverse needs
of pupils, including those with disabilities and exceptionalities.
Teacher:(5) The teacher uses an understanding of individual and group motivation and
behavior to create a learning environment that encourages positive social interaction,
active engagement in learning, and self-motivation.
Teacher:(7) The teacher organizes and plans systematic instruction based upon
knowledge of subject matter, pupils, the community and curriculum goals.

Step II D. Plan for Assessing and Documenting the Goal

Goal: I will create guided reading groups based on the reading skills that students need so that
the developmental needs of each student will be met.
I will assess my professional growth through:

Written reflections on the lessons that I teach.

Notes from meeting with other teachers.
Feedback from my students about how my lesson went.

I will assess my students' progress through:

Daily journals about things that the students have learned or questions that they have.
Daily observations.
