INTASC STANDARD #7
PLANNING FOR INSTRUCTION

DESCRIPTION

The teacher plans instruction that supports every student in meeting rigorous learning
goals by drawing upon knowledge of content areas, curriculum, cross-disciplinary
skills, and pedagogy, as well as knowledge of learners and the community context.
RATIONALE
We picked this INTASC standard because we feel that looking more into the STEM
education we support the learning goals by drawing upon knowledge of STEM based
learning.

STEM IS

Stem is an acronym that stands for Science Technology Engineering and Math. A common definition is
STEM education is an interdisciplinary approach to learning. Academic concepts are coupled with realworld lessons as students study these subjects to make connections between school, community, work,
and the global enterprise for the ability to compete in the new economy.

ABOUT STEM LEARNING

STEM uses more critical thinking and problem-solving skills versus basic rhetoric.
It is argued that more students will gain diplomas in a STEM-based school.
STEM is used to prepare students for college-level math and science

STEM degree holding citizens are more likely to get Masters degrees

ABOUT STEM WORKING

From 2005-2010 STEM jobs were expected to increase by 47%

38% of college students who start a STEM major do not go on to get degrees or careers in it
30%-36% of middle school science and math teachers are not qualified to teach those subjects.

ABOUT STEM EFFECTS

STEM is not an across-the-board standard and students are being left out
STEM allows students to gain work experience while studying similar to a co-op

A lot of STEM based jobs are going unfilled

STEM learning allows citizens to compete globally

SIDE BY SIDE COMPARISON

Pros
Engineering starts at a younger age
Offered to all students instead of gifted only
Better prepares students for STEM related jobs

Cons
Schools are losing sight of basic standards to try

and push the fad

STEM gives false hope to future career

opportunities
Teachers are not equipped to teach STEM

As a student, how
could your educational
experience have been
effected by STEM
based instruction???

As a teacher, how
will STEM based
curriculum effect
you???
