Professionalism

Demonstrate a level of professionalism that is congruent with the inherent values, ethics
and behaviors of the discipline of nursing. (BSN Outcomes)
Webster describes profession as a chosen, paid occupation requiring prolonged training
and formal qualification. Professionals, therefore can be defined as individuals expected to
display competent and skillful behaviors in alignment with their profession. Being professional
then is the act of behaving in a manner defined and expected by the chosen profession.
(Gokenbach, 2013)
Nurses need to act in a professional manner at all times. Nurses must show other people
that are part of the medical staff as well as patients and their families that they are professionals.
It involves ethics, inherent values, and behavior that is reflective of that field. Nurses that hold a
BSN degree should exhibit such behavior automatically because they know that the way that
they behave reflects not only on them but the entire medical field as well.
I have learned that the importance of obtaining a BSN degree will help my patients
because they will be receiving the best care possible due to rigorous study and experience in
school as well as practical experience. Nurses need to be the best possible so obtaining a BSN
degree will help reach that goal. As far as the future of nursing is concerned since it is
progressive it will help nurses to stay up to date with current issues and advances in medical
research and treatment.
